Lipscomb upsets the No. 1 seed Liberty Flames 77-71

The Lipscomb Bisons upset the Liberty Flames 77-71 Saturday afternoon in Allen Arena — in a day that honored the team’s seniors. The win locks the Bisons into the third seed in the ASUN Championship Tournament, earning a home game. “We’ve really had an unselfish bunch all year,” Lipscomb coach Lennie Acuff said. “Now we’re finally seeing some fruit.” Lipscomb, despite starting the season 3-6, finishes the season at 14-15 (9-7 ASUN). “We were really dead in the water about three weeks ago,” Acuff said. “Our guys really stepped up and kept going and doing the right thing. They’re high character kids.” Against Liberty, it was all Lipscomb. The Bisons jumped out to a 21-3 lead with just seven and a half minutes played in the first half. Two minutes later, the lead was up to 29-6. Three-pointers were especially important to the Bisons in the first half. Lipscomb made 10 of the 11 free throws attempted in the first 20 minutes. “Our guys really played well,” Acuff said. “You’re just not going to hit 10 of 11 very often, but I was proud of our guys.” The Flames were able to drop the Bisons lead down to five points on several occasions in the second half, including one final attempt to steal the game that dropped the lead to 76-71 with just over a minute to play in regulation. Each time, Lipscomb was able to put a run of scoring together to keep the game out of Liberty’s reach. The Bisons had four players in double figures, including senior Andrew Fleming (20 points) and center Ahsan Asadullah (18)....

The Bisons defeat FGCU Eagles 64-54, StarWars Night, Garrison Mathews Appearance

The Lipscomb Bisons defeated the FGCU Eagles 64-54 on Thursday night. Also in Allen Arena the Bisons made sure the Star Wars Night tradition continued and Garrison Mathews’ returned to Lipscomb. Tonight was Greg Jones’s night. The sophomore dropped 24 points, a career-high, including four three-pointers. “I’m proud of [Jones],” said Bisons Head Coach Lennie Acuff. “He didn’t get off to a great start, but the boy sure has rallied; he’s stayed the course and is seeing the fruit of it.” Ahsan Asadullah recorded his eleventh double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Miles Miller also was in double figures for the Bisons with 11 points. “We run offense through Ahsan,” said Acuff. “He’s having an unbelievable year – I think he should be the player of the year in the league.” Lipscomb started the game down 8-2 but scored the game’s next 13 points to take the lead. The Bisons went into halftime ahead 32-21 and never looked back. The key to the Bisons success was the defense. Lipscomb stole the ball 10 times, and Michael Buckland recorded a block. “We guarded well,” Acuff said. “We’ve continued to improve as a defensive team, and that’s important for us.” A poor shooting night for FGCU made matters worse for the team. The Eagles shot 20-53, including 9-26 from the three-point range. This led to several scoring droughts of two or more minutes throughout both halves for the Eagles. FGCU showed life in the second half but was not able to narrow the gap enough before Lipscomb regained control. “They made some really good runs,” said Greg...

The Bisons went into half-time leading the Ospreys by two, 45-43. “We really shared the ball and played well,” said Head Coach Lennie Acuff. “They (UNF) are tremendously talented, really well-coached and a good basketball team. It’s just a long game with them and they can score.” The Ospreys came out of half-time and tied up the game with off their first possession. Bisons improve to 4-0 in conference play

Lipscomb remained undefeated and tied for first place in the Atlantic Sun Conference with an 80-77 double-overtime win over Jacksonville Thursday night. Lipscomb was missing two of its usual starters, Nathan Moran and Brett Wishon, due to concussions. Head coach Casey Alexander recognized that the adjustments to the line-up were a challenge. “Facing a zone for 40 minutes without your two best shooters is definitely a challenge,” Alexander said. “But we found a way to get it done.” Allen Arena had quite the buzz, from both the increased number of fans and with the participation of the Hunters Lane High School band. The Dolphins went off with an onslaught of offense, due to the high amount of turnovers from the Bisons early in the first half. The Bisons finished the first half trailing 35-21. The Dolphins knocked down five three-pointers toward the end of the half and shot nearly 50% from the field. Lipscomb, on the other hand, hit only three three-pointers and shot a little over 30%. The beginning of the second half was a completely different story, with the Bisons going on a 11-3 run in the first five minutes, cutting the Jacksonville lead to five. As six minutes ran off the clock, both sides were scoring back and forth, and with under four minutes left, the Dolphins led 54-53. With 1:18 remaining in regulation, Lipscomb freshman guard Aaron Korn tied the game at 58 with a three-pointer. With 26 seconds left, junior Talbott Denny took a charge. J.C. Hampton took the last shot of the game, which resulted in a near make that sent the game into the first overtime. “I thought our energy was...
