REVIEW: Lipscomb’s new pizzeria serves ‘pretty fly pie’

Over the years, Lipscomb has had different pizzerias to satisfy the students and faculty on campus who cannot imagine life without the delicious Italian creation. In the past, it was Pizza Hut and then Papa John’s that held this special place on campus, but now the pizza baton is being passed on to the newest dining experience—Pie on the Fly. With a name that advertises speed and the classic Americanized Italian dish, I took it within my pizza-holding hands to try it for myself and see if it was what it advertised to be. It was lunch rush on Wednesday when I first tried Pie on the Fly. I awkwardly stood in line, my stomach growling for food as I pondered the menu. Thankfully, the menu was straightforward, having a make-your-own pizza with many options of toppings for the creatives out there. It also had a few classics to choose from, and then if any of you are one of those sacrilegious haters of pizza, there are even a few pasta options. The line was long, so I had plenty of time to talk to the others who were before me. Haley H. and Kelli D., two nursing students, have been to Pie on the Fly before, both getting the pepperoni pizza. Kelli liked the soft crust and the freshness the pizza had, while Haley said she thought the sauce was good, though she mentioned that she missed Papa John’s. Lipscomb closes majority of dining options due to staffing issues

Lipscomb announced Tuesday morning that campus dining is experiencing “industry-wide” staffing issues due to COVID and the national labor shortage. “Many industries across the country are experiencing staffing shortages due to labor availability and health concerns. Unfortunately, from time to time these challenges also affect the Lipscomb community,”said the university in an email to students. “This week, Sodexo, our partner that operates and staffs Lipscomb Dining operations, is experiencing a staffing shortage across their Nashville operations which has an impact on the number of employees who are available to staff the various dining locations on our campus.” Toss, Blue Coast Burrito, Au Bon Pain, Chick-fil-A and Creekstone will be closed for the foreseeable future. While most students were away for spring break the inside of Au Bon Pain began taking form as employee training started. Lipscomb dining manager Wolcott Fary said Au Bon Pain will have two opening dates — an opening for staff to begin training and the grand opening, which will take place Tuesday, March 31 following Chapel. Lipscomb Dining chips in a few new changes to on-campus locations

Lipscomb Dining may not be promoting any new restaurants or redesigns for the fall semester, but a few developments here and there have solidified the idea that campus’ dining department is always open to change.  Dining General Manager Wolcott Fary says that not much is different at the Bennett Campus Center food court this semester, but he did have a few updates to share. For example, popular dining spot Far East Fusion has undergone a few adjustments. “It used to be that they would pack everything into a bowl, stick it in the window and that would be it,” Fary said. Fary said that he supplied Far East Fusion with new steam equipment to freshen the food. He also explained that the restaurant will now serve fresh food, and the students can order what they want. Because of this change, business for Far East Fusion has doubled, according to Fary. While Blue Coast Burrito and Papa John’s have only utilized occasional specials, Chick-fil-A has added new salads. But, one item that won’t be arriving at Chick-fil-A anytime soon are the legendary milkshakes. Fary said that because the Chick-fil-A at Lipscomb  is technically an express store, the corporate office decides what should be served at express stores. Therefore, unless the corporate office includes milkshakes in the express restaurants’ menus, the well-loved dessert won’t be coming to campus. Fary said that Zebi is doing fine, but Auntie Anne’s has slowed down measurably from last year’s hype. Lipscomb Dining serves up changes for new school year

Students entering the 2013-2014 school year may have immediately noticed the changes to Lipscomb’s meal plans upon returning to campus. In the past, Sodexo, Lipscomb’s dining company, offered meal plans with a set number of  Bison Café meals and dining dollars per semester. This year, Sodexo has changed the meal plans to offer a set number of meals per week and a set number of dining dollars per semester. The company has also added the Bison Bucks system, a program that allocates funds to be used at select Lipscomb and off-campus locations through the use of new ID cards. Although the meal plan for Village residents is the only one that currently includes Bison Bucks as a part of the package, any student can purchase Bison Bucks with their own money online. As this is the first semester for Bison Bucks, some students are currently contemplating the benefits of taking part in the new program. According to Wolcott Fary, Lipscomb’s Food Service General Manager, there are three main benefits to Bison Bucks. Budgeting: “It’s geared to you personally,” Fary said. Fary suggested that is a good way for students to budget their money by knowing exactly how much they have to spend. Future specials: Although there are no automatic price reductions on products bought with Bison Bucks, Fary ensures that this is an investment in these restaurants, and he foresees some specials for student’s benefit could be added in the future. “The restaurants, as we get rolling with it, will probably run some specials that will only be available to folks with Bison Bucks.
