Coming off of a weekend split against Jacksonville last weekend, the Bisons sat at 7-5 coming into their last home weekend seeking a win in the first game of the series against Kennesaw State. The Bisons won, 76-62. Kennesaw coming in with their first conference win of the season the previous weekend against Stetson was looking to keep their momentum against Lipscomb. The first half was an even duel for both teams with nearly identical stat lines through the first 20 minutes of play. In the first half, Asadullah hit solid from the field and the free-throw line. A healthy performance from Jake Wolfe and Mr. Consistent, Romeo Ferguson helped the Bisons in the first half. However, it was Kennesaw who was up at the half 35-36. Backed by solid play from #3, Youngblood, with 12 points that matched Asadullah’s first-half mark. 11 first-half turnovers are what kept the game as close as it was. After the halftime break, Lipscomb came back out re-energized and looking fired-up. With a pristine night’s finish for Asadullah (23 points) and continual effort from Johnson, Ferguson, and Wolfe — the Bisons finished the game out handily, 76-62. Lipscomb finished the game seeing 4 players score in double figures — Johnson (16), Ferguson (13), Wolfe (12), Asadullah (23). It was just the win Lipscomb needed to move the Bisons to 8-5 in Conference play. Lipscomb and Kennesaw State will finish their series matchup on Saturday night in Allen Arena at 7 PM. During the non-conference slate, it would seem that Liberty’s men’s basketball program was the stronger team after beating two SEC teams and rattling mid-major programs. Lipscomb meanwhile had just two non-conference wins against Division I, opponents, after being picked to win the ASUN. But then the script completely flipped Saturday at Allen Arena, as the Bisons (6-5, 1-0 ASUN) raced off to a 35-14 advantage over Liberty (8-4, 0-1 ASUN) late in the first half and won the game 77-70. Liberty would narrow that lead to as little as three in the second half, but Lipscomb led the entire game. “It was a really, really, really good team win… we only turned it over four times, and that’s fantastic,” Lipscomb coach Lennie Acuff said during a postgame interview with ESPN+. The Flames were without head coach Ritchie McKay, who is dealing with COVID-19. Associate head coach Brad Soucie took his place. Redshirt junior center Ahsan Asadullah led the way with 24 points after struggling to score consistently all season, while sophomore guard KJ Johnson continued his impressive second-year campaign with 17. “It’s definitely a confidence booster,” Asadullah said. “I knew that eventually, they would be falling. I’ve been working on it outside of practice.” Senior forward Parker Hazen and grad transfer guard Romeao Ferguson combined for 16 rebounds on the defensive side. Liberty meanwhile got 16 points out of its leading scorer Darius McGhee, a 5-9 guard with great vertical ability. But his dreary day at the three-point line (2-for-9) highlighted what was a lackluster overall team performance from downtown. The Bisons defeated the Freed Hardeman Lions 93-72 after a night full of hot shooting, sinking 18 threes, the third most in the D-1 era. The team shot a season-high 60 percent from the floor. The Lions gained a lead just under a minute into the game, but sophomore guard Carson Cary hit a triple and put the Bisons ahead. After the team gained the lead, they never let it go and continued to grow it as the game went on. Sophomore guard KJ Johnson and senior guard Romeao Ferguson worked as a pair early on, putting up 15 of the team’s first 18 points. The team sank threes all through the first half, putting them up 44-37 going into the second. This was the second consecutive game the Bisons have scored 40 points in both the first and second halves. Johnson and Ferguson scored the beginning points putting the Bisons up 19 on the Lions. Cary then caught a breakaway and a triple adding 5 more points for the Bisons. Staying hot in the long-range, sophomore guard Jake Wolfe, freshman guard Tommy Murr, and freshman guard Tanner Shulman all contributed triples to the score. The Lipscomb men’s basketball team took down FGCU in an ASUN quarter-finals thriller. The third seed Bisons defeated the sixth seed Eagles 68-63. “It was a really important game. Obviously, it’s an eliminations game. We knew that we were going to have to play hard because they weren’t going to give up because it’s an elimination game for them as well,” said sophomore center Ahsan Asadullah. Both teams had sharpshooting in the first half, shooting 45 percent from the floor. The score was tied four times and saw five lead changes in the first half. However, and 8-3 run from the Eagles put them up 33-32 at the half. The second half was a back and forth game. Lipscomb came out on an 8-2 run with back-to-back baskets from Ahsan Asadullah. But FGCU responded with a 7-0 run of their own. “I’m real proud of our kids. A month ago we were 7-13 and 2-5 in the league, but we never quit we just kept coming and coming,” said Acuff. Asadullah, named first-team All ASUN earlier in the day, stepped up for his team with a career-high 40 points along with 14 rebounds. “I have been fortunate to have a lot of good players and some guys that have played at a high level, but that right there — to put the chips on the table put everything on the line. When the Lipscomb men’s basketball team took the floor against Liberty on Saturday, the Bisons needed a tough win or some help from opponents to secure the fourth seed in the ASUN tournament. Not only did Lipscomb beat Liberty 77-71 (including a 29-6 lead to start the game), but Stetson also lost to Jacksonville, and Lipscomb got the tiebreaker over the Hatters and jumped a spot. This comes one season after graduating from a star-studded lineup of seniors that included Garrison Mathews and the transfer of starting point guard Kenny Cooper to Western Kentucky. Not to mention Casey Alexander’s departure to Belmont. “I was really proud of our guys for staying the course,” Lipscomb head coach Lennie Acuff said before practice on Monday. “I thought there [were] many times we could have punted. And obviously our roster’s been depleted, and we lost [Jake Wolfe and Alex Jones] for the year. But we just stayed the course, and we kept going.” That means the Bisons (14-15, 9-7 ASUN) have the No. 3 seed heading into Tuesday night’s matchup against No. 6 FGCU at 7 p.m. CT.
