Men’s tennis loses 5-2 in conference match against Kennesaw State

Lipscomb men’s tennis suffered a 5-2 loss in their second conference match at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith tennis center against Kennesaw State on Thursday. Due to one of their players’ being ill, the Bisons’ lineup had to be changed, which caused them to make a rough adjustment. “We had a sickness with Jorge Ortegon (player No. 3), so we had to take him out of the lineup, which obviously doesn’t help,” Lipscomb coach Geoff Hernandez said. “But you want your team to be ready to take the chances when they have them.” The Bisons (1-1 ASUN) started the afternoon losing the doubles point against the Owls. In line one for Lipscomb, Victor Chaw and Pablo Caffarena got the job done and defeated Kennesaw’s Drew Lahey and Bryan Triana 6-3. However, the Bisons were unable to win the doubles point in lines two and three, which allowed the Owls to begin the match with a 1-0 lead. “Our one and two, Victor and Pablo, played great in doubles and in singles,” Hernandez said. “The rest of the team did not step up.” In line two, Lipscomb’s Jake Penny and Francesco Tacconi lost 6-3 to Lucas de Torres Curth and Kevin Patel while Pedro Uribe and David Skrabut lost 6-0 to Jack Sorel and Fermin Calvo Barcelo in line three. “Today’s match was not our best performance,” Hernandez said. “It was one of those where our team was divided.” The Bisons were unable to take away the Owls’ lead. Penny, playing in line four, lost 6-1 in both sets to Kennesaw’s Sebastian Osorio, which put the Bisons down 2-0. Chaw gave hope when...

Men’s tennis beats Presbyterian in first home outdoor match of season

Lipscomb’s men’s tennis team held its first outdoor home match at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center against Presbyterian College Monday and emerged with 4-2 victory over Presbyterian. The Bisons (5-7) started the match down one point after losing the doubles play. On the third line, Lipscomb’s Jake Penny and Michael Tougher kept their lead against Presbyterian’s Jamie Castillo-Lopez and Vance Mercer and won the set 6-2. “Line three is playing pretty well and they’re getting along,” Lipscomb assistant coach Alejandro Manzanares said. “They did the job and took care of the task pretty fast.” However, on the second line, Lipscomb’s Jorge Ortegon and Pedro Uribe lost 6-2 against Alberto Conde and Nicholas McKinney, which put the doubles play at a tie. “I feel like [line two] didn’t start off the right way,” said Manzanares. “They didn’t have the right energy – they waited a little bit too long to actually start the match, then it was too late to come back from it.” In the No. 1 spot, Lipscomb’s Victor Chaw and Pablo Caffarena played a long battle stretching the set into a tiebreaker but ended up losing 7-6 against Presbyterian’s Oscar Alvarez and Max Banson. “Doubles was rough,” Lipscomb’s No. 1 player Chaw said. “We missed a couple key points. It’s just one of those when you miss a key point, and you just lose it. It was a tough loss, but we bounced back pretty well [in singles].” Despite the loss the doubles point, the Bisons still headed into singles play with a strong mindset and hope for a positive outcome. Playing in line five for Lipscomb was...

Lipscomb men’s tennis loses 4-3 to UTC

The Lipscomb men’s tennis team lost against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Friday night at the Richland Country Club. The Bisons (3-4) were able to get the lead at the beginning of the night when they won the doubles point. In line one, Lipscomb’s Victor Chaw and Pablo Caffarena were the first to finish their set and lost 6-3 to UTC’s Kerim Hyatt and Simon Bustamente. This gave Lipscomb the lead at 1-0. “I think it was important that line three finally came together,” Lipscomb coach Geoff Hernandez said. “For Michael to get his first win and Jake to work his way through the injuries and compete, it makes us feel that we’re not just going to win at two lines, but we’re going to win at every line, so I thought [their win] was really big.” Although the Bisons were off to a good start for themselves, they were unable to keep their lead in singles play. On the first line, Lipscomb’s Chaw lost both of his sets 6-1 and 6-4 to UTC’s Gerdes, which led the Bisons to losing their lead and setting the score at 1-1.
