The Lipscomb track and field team has anticipated hosting Belmont in a home meet for some time, and now it finally gets to do this Friday as the outdoor season kicks off. The track and field Battle of the Boulevard is historic for the Bisons because it is the first home meet the team has ever hosted. “I think it’s a good idea that we have a home meet, and I’m kind of excited, being a senior, that it is the first home meet that we have ever hosted,” senior sprinter Kenny Smith said. Even though running at home is exciting for the team, they said there are still a few factors they feel uneasy about. Smith said that the team’s motivation could be higher. “It’s hard [to get motivated] because some people aren’t taking it as seriously as it should be taken, like a normal, big track meet,” Smith said. “We’re not really looking at this meet as a meet, we’re looking more to it as practice, which is never good going into a meet — thinking of it as practice when you should be thinking of it as a meet — as competition.” Regardless of the team’s degree of motivation toward the meet, the team is excited since it is the first outdoor meet of the season. At the end of the indoor season, the Bisons showed some success. The spring semester may have ended two weeks ago for most students, but for spring athletics things have now just started to wrap up. For anyone that is a Bison fan, what an amazing spring it has been for all the athletes. The Lipscomb track and field team completed their Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Florida, May 16 and 17th. Much like the whole year, many Bisons found success. Madi Talbert received first place in the 3000-meter race. Talbert finished with a time of 10:28.76 making her the record holder in the A-Sun outdoor 3000 meter, but it did not stop there for Talbert as she finished with the gold in the 5000 meters. Freshman Sally Larson also received first place in her 10,000 meter event. April Terry was covered in bronze as she threw the shot put 13.10 meters and the hammer throw with a distance of 50.29 meters, both for third place finishes. “I didn’t feel ready the week before the meet. I prayed and meditated, asking God to help me with my attitude,” April Terry said. “In the hammer, I fouled my first two throws and threw a short throw to get into the finals. The same happened in shot. Neither rain, wind nor cold weather can keep the Bisons from competing and succeeding. The Lipscomb Track & Field team competed in the two day Vanderbilt meet this past weekend. Vanderbilt, The Ohio State, Belmont, Austin Peay and Alabama A&M all took part in the meet. “This was the best meet we’ve had at Vanderbilt since I’ve been at Lipscomb,” Coach Bill Taylor said. “Traditionally, for some reason, we’ve struggled for the most part at this meet.” Setting the stage on Friday was Dani Walker winning the Invitational 1500 meters and setting a new school record with a record time of 4:21.34. Right behind her was Madi Talbert, who moved to No. 3 on Lipscomb’s all-time list. Ki’Ana Christy has really been excelling during this outdoor season. She has broken her jumping record for the second week in a row by jumping 11.36 meters. Setting her own personal record was Jazmyne McGill. She threw 38.09 meters in the hammer and in shot recorded 11.38 meters. Del McSpadden also found success in the hammer throw with a throw of 39.08 meters. Tucker Peabody found himself on the podium winning second place in the 200 meters with a 21.03 time. Peabody also came in second in the 100 meters crossing the finish line with a time of 10.55 “It’s very challenging to do the events in bad weather,” junior April Terry said. “In the rain it’s so easy to fall and slip. Success has been something that Lipscomb Track & Field has had a taste of this year and it’s 2014 Indoor Atlantic Sun Championship was no different. The indoor conference championship was held at the JDL Fast Track in North Carolina this year. The men finished with their best ever in third place beating their old record of finishing in fifth. The women finished fifth, tying their best ever. Junior Kenny Smith is a member of the 4×400 relay team that picked up first place at the meet and is a veteran when it comes to the team’s success. “I feel that every year the team fights more and more for each other. When I say that, we fight for every point we can get,” Smith said. “This season the men’s team got the most points we have ever got. It shows we are going in the right direction.” Smith, along with Tucker Peabody, Brian Gentry and Colin Dempster are the men’s 4×400 meter relay team. A team effort led to a time of 3:18.57. For the second year in a row, Peabody won the 200 meter dash and came in second place in the 60 meter dash. Two stand out freshman are Wayne Newman and Christian Freeman. Newman earned the 1st place title in 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.07. Freeman placed 3rd in the men’s 500 meter and 2nd in the men’s 300 meter. It is with deep sadness that the Lipscomb University athletic department announces that rising sophomore Matt Deery, a track and field standout, lost his life in an automobile accident in Upper Nazareth Township, Pa., on Wednesday afternoon. An All-Atlantic Sun Conference honoree for the Bisons in just his first season of competition, Deery was honored by his teammates and coaches as “Freshman of the Year” and as the “Fightin’ Bison” award recipient given to the toughest competitor on the team. “Matt was an incredible athlete and an even more incredible person,” Lipscomb track and field Head Coach Bill Taylor said. “Everyone loved him. He was a smart, caring, likable guy. He was a gifted athlete, yet he was so humble. “It’s really hard to comprehend this right now. Matt was a wonderful person with a gigantic future. He is going to be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. I know our entire team is praying for his family, his friends and each other.” Deery became the first Lipscomb field athlete in school history to earn second-team all-conference honors at the A-Sun indoor championships this past season with a second-place pole vault of 4.55m (14’ 11”). The Philipsburg, N.J., native went on to earn a bronze medal in the heptathlon at the A-Sun meet earning 4,889 points that set a school record. “We are obviously heartbroken for Matt’s family and friends, and I ask that you please be in prayer for comfort and peace all of those who will be grieving over his loss,” said Lipscomb Director of Athletics Philip Hutcheson. “Matt was a very special student athlete and...
