Women’s soccer takes victory in match against Miami Hurricanes

CORAL GABLES, FL – The Lipscomb women’s soccer team defeated the Miami Hurricanes 2-0 in their first away match of the season. With the win over Miami, who represents the Atlantic Coast Conference, Lipscomb earns its second triumph in two attempts this year against a Power Five conference opponent. They bested Mississippi State 2-1 in their opening match of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper CJ Graham starred for the Bisons, earning a clean sheet despite facing 13 shots from the Hurricanes. She was forced to make four saves on the evening in order to keep Miami out of her goal for all 90 minutes. Alongside Graham, defenders Emily Patti, Katia Hanger, and Logan McFadden put in full shifts as well, playing in every single minute of the match. McFadden, a Birmingham, Alabama, native, continued her streak of playing in every minute of every match all season for the Bisons. In the attack, Lipscomb’s strikeforce was potent as ever. VCU transfer and Waldorf, Maryland-born Kale’a Perry found the back of the net for the second straight match, while Haley Williams, a freshman from St. Simons Island, Georgia, scored off the bench. Williams got the breakthrough goal with a left-footed effort into the bottom corner near the halftime whistle, and on the other side of the break, Perry found the back of the net with the same foot off an assist from debutant Allie Dunn. The junior winger from Oak Ridge started the match and contributed to a shot and the Perry assist in her 42 minutes. Junior center midfielder Cami Rogers led Lipscomb in shots and shots on goal, with three...
Lipscomb women’s soccer survives penalty-kick duel to win second consecutive ASUN title

Lipscomb women’s soccer survives penalty-kick duel to win second consecutive ASUN title

It all came down to who missed first during penalty kicks, and Lipscomb had just enough to pull off a 4-3 thriller over the Kennessaw State Owls to win to win the 2019 ASUN soccer championship. It is the second consecutive title and seventh consecutive win this year. The Owls took control early, dominating the time of possession and creating several chances to score. However, Lipscomb’s “bend but don’t break” style of defense allowed them to escape the first ten minutes without conceding a goal. In the next several minutes, the Lady Bisons created enough space to find several of their own chances at the goal. Olivia Doak had several chances to score in the first half. Two of them were being near empty boxes and one on a corner kick, but good defense, an errant pass and an offside call ended those efforts. Lipscomb and Doak’s offensive advances paid off in the 15th minute, when Doak received a pass from Molly Grant, and put the shot into the upper corner of the net. “[The goal] gave us confidence,” Lipscomb coach Kevin O’Brien said. “We started playing better after that.” Lipscomb had control of the time of possession in the latter stages of the half, but the Owls still came close to equalizing. Goalkeeper Melissa Gray kept the ball out of the goal with several key saves and other defensive efforts. Lipscomb had eight offside penalties in the first half and added one more on its first possession of the second half, which would end up setting the tone for the half. The Lady Bisons never seemed to be able...
Lady Bison Soccer Top the Stetson Hatters in Defensive Win 2-0

Lady Bison Soccer Top the Stetson Hatters in Defensive Win 2-0

The Lady Bison secured another conference win as they beat the Stetson Hatters 2-0 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. The game started off in favor of Lipscomb as there won three straight corner kicks the Lady Bison. This would be a good indicator of how the first half would go as the Lady Bison outshot the Hatters eight to two. Both teams would have glimpsed in front of the goal before the end of the first half. The second half was no different. The Lady Bison would have an array of chances offensively, putting up nine shots to the Hatters five. Then in the 69th minute, Lipscomb finally broke through and scored on a great solo run from Macy Douglas that was set up by a pass from Molly Grant. Douglas, who is a freshman, has really come into her own in the past couple of games as she scored her third goal of the season. Grant, who is fourth on the team in terms of assists, got her third assist of the season. After the first goal of the game, Stetson didn’t back down as they had a number of changes in the Lipscomb half. The Hatters had a couple of shots that yielded some opportunities for a goal, but nothing would come of them. Then, they had a corner kick that was deflected and then cleared away. This set up a scoring chance from Lipscomb that would ultimately be saved by Stetson goalie Lara Bates. However, after a bad clearance from the Hatters, Lipscomb capitalized on a cross in the 86th minute from Hailey Eck to Maycie McKay to...

Lipscomb women’s soccer team inspired by U.S. women’s World Cup championship

Lipscomb women’s soccer team inspired by U.S. women’s World Cup championship

Lipscomb’s women’s soccer players got a big boost by watching the U.S. nation squad win the World Cup. Lipscomb’s women’s soccer players are thrilled by Sunday’s 2-0 championship victory over the Netherlands, the second World Cup championship in a row, since the U.S. women also won in 2015, the preceding tournament. It is the fourth World Cup championship for the U.S. women since the legendary ’99ers captivated the world 20 years ago. “During the World Cup, it was exciting to see people who don’t play soccer be so engaged and supportive of this women’s team,” said Logan McFadden, a sophomore defender. And it wasn’t just the excitement of the fans, “hearing sports broadcasters and newspeople talk about the change and popularity they have brought” adds to the thrill, she said. Of course, when a team is expected to win, things could backfire quickly if the women had lost, according to McFadden. “All that hype and stardom they had received would have turned against them.” The pressure didn’t slow down the U.S. women, she added. “Each game I watched, I saw the amount of fight they had and it was as if they knew the trophy wasn’t going to be handed to them, and the closer they got to the final, the harder they fought. They have proven they are the best and they deserve to be treated like it. “And now that a ton of more people saw that, there is no denying it.” Hannah Torbett, redshirt junior midfielder, said she’s simply inspired, “because I know how far the women’s game has come.” And, to her, it’s almost like...
