While most Lipscomb students were on spring break, the men’s and women’s tennis teams were hard at work starting Atlantic Sun Conference play. The men’s tennis team started off their spring break with a strong 6-1 win over the University of North Alabama on March 18 at home. The Bisons won two of the three doubles matches to get the winning point, and in singles action, the Bisons dominated. Sophomore Rob Mitchell, freshman Alejandro Manzanares, freshman Philippe Courteau, junior John Tougher and freshman Thais Minet all won their singles matches outright. Following the dominating performance over North Alabama, the Bisons looked to take the momentum into their first conference match against the University of North Florida on March 19. However, the men fell short in their first conference outing. The men lost 4-1 with the only singles victory coming from Mitchell, and the team did not win a doubles point. While the men were busy with their week, the women’s team was just as hard at work. The women started off the week on March 17 against Western Kentucky hoping to get a win before conference play, but the team fell short, losing 4-3. The Lady Bisons hoped to make a quick turnaround from the loss when they also took on UNF at home on March 19, but they fell 4-0 to the Ospreys. Freshman Hannah Gamage and junior Danielle Kinnen won the only point for the Lady Bisons. The duo won their doubles match 8-0, and the Lady Bisons did not win a singles point. The Lipscomb men’s tennis team beat Ball State 4-3 Saturday evening while the women’s tennis team lost to Columbus State 5-2. Despite cancellations and freezing temperatures, both the men and women pushed hard and played their game indoors. The men’s team came from behind to get its win against Ball State. The Bisons’ top seed, freshman Rob Mitchell, took a 6-1 and 7-5 win at the beginning of singles. The three spot, freshman Philippe Courteau won 6-4 and 7-5. A big win for the Bisons came from sophomore John Tougher. Tougher won in three sets, 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3. In the women’s match, Columbus started by taking the doubles point against Lipscomb. Junior Danielle Kinnen and freshmen Hannah Gamage were able to win one point in the doubles matches out of three. The singles matches were up and down for each team, but two of the Lipscomb ladies were able to pull out a win. Sophomore Laura Kent secured Lipscomb’s first singles point by winning two quick-paced sets in a row, 6-3 and 6-2. Senior Jenny Borck also played an aggressive singles match that landed with a win 6-3, 4-6 and 10-6. “I started off slow, but I ended up holding it together and coming back both times and pushing through on the ten-point tiebreak,” Borck said. Lipscomb’s men’s and women’s Tennis teams each had matches against Austin Peay this past Saturday. The men’s match was at the Richland Tennis Club, and the women’s match was at the Whitworth Racquet Club. The women faired better than the men by defeating Austin Peay 4-3. The men lost their match by a score of 6-1. The women lost 2 out of the 3 doubles matches that gave Austin Peay the doubles point. Lipscomb’s Melissa Kromer and Laura Kent won their doubles match against Austin Peay’s Vanessa Tavares and Isabela Jovanovic. The girls came back to make a statement in the singles matches winning 4 out of 6. Lipscomb’s No. 1 Deahna Welcher defeated Andra Cornea in a close match that ended 3-6, 6-2, (10-6). No. 2 Melissa Kromer, however, lost to Ornella Di Salvo in another close match that ended 2-6, 6-3, (8-10). Lipscomb’s No. 5 Lorena Djuknic had one of the most meaningful matches of the night because it was the match that decided who would take the ultimate victory. Djuknic defeated Hannah Tatlock after two sets with a final score of 6-4, 6-3. The men’s tennis team has faced a tough obstacle all season with only having five players instead of the usual six, therefore they have to give up a point in singles and doubles automatically in each match. “We had a tough loss to Austin Peay State. Lipscomb athletics jumped the hurdle of the NCAA’s APRs last week, with each team having the necessary grades to carry on business as usual. The NCAA’s Academic Progress Rates are assessed each term and pinpoint low academic scores for all NCAA athletes under scholarship. Any team that reaches the point of scoring a 925 or under can incur scholarship loss. Scoring below a 900 can warrant a multitude of other penalties. Lipscomb athletics passed the reports, with no team scoring below a 940. For the second year in a row, women’s tennis led the school with a score of 1000 – the highest obtainable score. The program has had the same score of 1000 since the 2008-2009 report. Below is a chart showing the APRs of all Lipscomb teams, comparing them to last year’s reports. Jenny Borck, a sophomore from San Diego, has been playing tennis twelve years, and now at the collegiate level, she’s still loving every minute. At the age of 6, Borck’s parents put her in tennis, and she has been playing ever since. “My parents play tennis,” Borck said. “Instead of watching them play all the time, I would just go on another court with one of their friends or by myself, and I just ended up really liking it.” As Borck grew up and became interested in more competitive tennis, her career became more focused. Borck played on her high school tennis team all four years and said her team was special not only because they were talented, but also for another reason. “My sophomore year, my mom became the tennis coach of my high school,” Borck said. Having her mom as her coach was something that Borck said she truly enjoyed about high school tennis. “It was really cool that my mom was our coach.” Along with her high school career, Borck played in different tournaments on the side against other ranked opponents. “In order to get a national ranking, you have to compete in national tournaments,” she explained. “I played in a lot of national tournaments in Southern California, but Southern California is one of the hardest divisions in the United States, so that made it hard.” During high school, Borck began the recruiting process, hoping to be noticed by college coaches.
