Camryn’s Choice: “Over the Garden Wall” Although “Over the Garden Wall” is technically a mini-series, it serves best as a movie watched all in one sitting. Since it only has 10 episodes, each only 10 minutes long, it is a quick and engaging tale that embraces all things spooky. The Cartoon Network show follows Greg and Wirt, two brothers on a journey to get home through creepy forests and talking pumpkins filled with humor and mystery. It’s the perfect Halloween watch for all ages. Available on Hulu Kathryn’s Choice: “Practical Magic” (1998) “Practical Magic” has been a part of my annual Halloween ritual since I was a kid. The film, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, manages to combine 90s rom-com antics with horror themes. The film ultimately puts an ethereal twist on grief, sisterhood and love. It seriously acknowledges heavy topics while embracing the beauty that can be found in dark times. Available on HBO Max Hannah’s Choice: “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” I really wanted to pick a horror movie for this list, but the more I thought about it, I realized that the movie I am the most scared of is “E.T.” I wouldn’t say that “E.T.” is necessarily a scary movie, but it is creepy and unsettling enough to make a great choice to watch around Halloween. The idea of an unidentified living creature hiding in my childhood stuffed animals is a fear I may never get over, but this classic movie introduced us to a young Drew Barrymore and the magic of Reese’s Pieces, so it’s probably a keeper. Jesica Beaty, a former sports writer for Lumination, now has a new beat: Major League Baseball wife. Beaty, a 2015 journalism and new media alumna, married her high school sweetheart and Belmont alum Matt Beaty. Matt played baseball for the Bruins and for the last few years has made his way up through the Los Angeles Dodgers’ minor-league organization. Jesica and Matt have been married for two and a half years. After the two got married, Jesica left her full-time job as a managing editor with The Aransas Pass (Texas) Progress and Ingleside Index to follow Matt. The couple has moved around quite a bit. Currently, the Beatys reside in Oklahoma, home of the Triple A Oklahoma City Dodgers. Matt was drafted by the Dodgers in 2015 and has played in the Rookie, Single A, Double A and Triple A leagues. Matt was added to the Dodgers’ 40-man lineup back in November. This year the Dodgers used one of his options and sent him to the minor league during spring training; this allows him to be called up and down at any time this year. Matt was called up by the Dodgers earlier this month for a game against the San Francisco Giants. “It was about 12:30 at night, and the Triple A manager called Matt,” Jesica said. “I was so excited for him and just so excited it was finally happening.” During that game, in his first at-bat in the major leagues, he got a hit and his first RBI. Lumination Network took home a multitude of honors from the Tennessee Associated Press Broadcasters and Tennessee Associated Press Media Editors 2014 College Awards. The awards ceremony was held at the John Seigenthaler Center Saturday afternoon. Lumination contributor Michael Fox tied for first place in the Best Multi-media Journalist category for his work on the planned Green Hills high rise story. Fox, along with fellow Lumination contributor Kelly Dean, tied for first in the Best Multi-media Package category for the Green Hills high rise story. The same package won second in the Best Television News Story category for Dean and Fox. The Lumination staff took home second place in the Best Multi-media Package category for their coverage of the Dove Awards held on campus. Contributor Carly Bergthold won a first place award for Radio Best Use of Sound for a Lumination Radio package on Lipscomb’s production of the play Les Misérables. The same story won third place for Best Radio Feature Story. Multimedia Editor Sydney Poe won first place in the Best Television Feature Story category for her story on The Contributor’s financial troubles. “[I’m] very proud and happy for all of our winners,” said communications and journalism department chair Alan Griggs. “Our four first place awards are unprecedented.” Lumination News, Lumination’s weekly news broadcast, won third place for Best Newscast, an award accepted by News Director Jael Teme and Poe, the former News Director. Contributor Savanna Schubert won third place in the Best Television Reporter category for her work on covering the Lipscomb/Liberty logo controversy.
