Lipscomb Women’s Tennis had a split weekend hosting the Memphis Tigers on Friday and the Illinois State Redbirds on Sunday at the Huston-Marsh-Griffin Tennis Center and traveling to Birmingham, Alabam to take on the UAB Blazers on Saturday. Overall, the Lady Bisons went 1-2 dropping their Friday and Saturday matchups, 1-6 and 2-4 respectively. Lipscomb bounced back with a 4-3 victory on Sunday. On Friday, junior Eleanor Chapman got the only victory for the Bisons coming back from behind after falling in her first set. Sunday, the Bisons once again fell behind early dropping the early doubles matches falling behind the Redhawks 0-2. But strong performances in the singles matchups from sophomore Emma Zakordoniec, junior Liza Diachenko, freshman Sasha Dobranos, and Chapman sealed the match for the Bisons. Lipscomb moves to 4-5 on the season and 4-3 at home. The Bisons’ next matchup will be Thursday at noon when the Bisons host Radford. American musician Shawn Amos once said, “Memphis is the place where rock was born and Martin Luther King, Jr., was killed. It’s full of contradictions, abject poverty, and riches that only music can provide.” Lipscomb’s Office of Intercultural Development and Law, Justice, and Society program invited students to Memphis over fall break to witness this city’s unique dichotomy. Students first visited Beale Street, named by CNN Travel as one of the most iconic streets in America. These three blocks in the heart of downtown Memphis gave students a glimpse into the place where blues, jazz, and rock ‘n’ roll were founded. “As a music lover, I felt like I could feel my roots on Beale Street. It was heavily influenced by the past and that’s where most of today’s music comes from. Memphis is soul and you could feel it when you walked those streets,” senior Noah Kimbrough said. But, the ultimate purpose of the trip was to give students tangible insight into the struggles, sacrifices, and successes of the Civil Rights era and the people who gave the movement life. The National Civil Rights museum stands in conjunction to the Lorraine Motel, the balcony where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed. Each exhibit within shows a different aspect of African American history, from transatlantic slavery of the early 1600s to the beginning of the Obama Administration in 2012. With a recent 200 million dollar update, the museum uses modern technology, live exhibits, artifacts, and film to give students an immersive look at Civil Rights. Power forward Luke Howard, a 2019 Tennessee Mr. Basketball award finalist, Sunday officially signed his letter of intent to play basketball at Lipscomb.Harding Academy’s boys basketball coach Kevin Starks expressed his excitement for Howard’s decision to come to Lipscomb. “I think he is really just scratching the surface of how good he can be,” Starks said. “I am excited for him to be with the coaching staff at Lipscomb, because I think they will help him grow and reach his potential.” The Harding Academy senior also received offers from Lincoln Memorial University, Drake University, the University of Texas at Arlington, Marist College, Campbell University, Kent State University and Troy University. Starks said that Howard’s versatility, athleticism, and hard work will take him far. “I think Luke’s potential is off the charts,” Starks said. “I believe that he has the chance to be an all-league player and to play basketball after college.“ Howard, originally from Vancouver, Canada, moved to Memphis two years ago and began playing basketball under Starks during the 2017-2018 season. Even given his short time at Harding Academy, Starks said that Howard was able to fit right in. He was one of the senior leaders for Harding Academy this year, averaging 23.8 points per game, eight rebounds per game, 62 percent field-goal shooting, 34 percent three-point shooting, 70 percent free-throw shooting, 1.8 assists per game, and 1.3 steals per game. “Luke is a 6-foot-9, athletic four man that can really, really shoot,” Starks said. “Because of his skill level, his upside is just tremendous.” Howard served a number of different roles for the Lions with the ability...

The fall sports teams are off to a great start this semester. Here is a recap on the games that have already been completed so far. Volleyball The Lipscomb volleyball team opened up the 2014 season with a 2-1 record at the Kansas Invitational. Friday Aug. 29 started with a disappointing season opener, losing 3-1 to No. 23 Creighton. Junior Brittany Estes recored her first career triple double in the match with 12 kills, 12 digs and 10 assists. Junior Bri McCombs led Lipscomb with 19 digs. Senior Lauren Ford added 18 digs. The big win came later that night against No. 22 Kansas. The Lady Bisons were down 2-0, but rallied back winning three sets in a row to get the 3-2 victory. The win was the first for the program over a ranked opponent. Lipscomb took set three 25-14, set four 26-24 and set five 15-12. Senior Jewell Dobson had a match-high 20 kills. Estes notched a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. McCombs recorded a match-high 20 digs. Coach Brandon Rosenthal earned his 200th win after the Lady Bisons defeated Utah Valley 3-1 on Aug. 30. Lipscomb won the first set 25-23, third set 25-17 and fourth set 25-15. Estes had 10 kills in the match, and earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for the invitational. Ford recorded a match high 15 kills. McCombs led the team with 14 digs. Junior Molly Spitznagle’s hitting percentage was .562 in the match with 10 kills. Briefly: The men’s basketball team (2-3) played in a true edge-of-your-seat thriller Monday night, losing a close battle with the 5-1 Murray State Racers, participants in last year’s NCAA Tournament. After leading at half-time, the Bisons kept it close until the closing minutes, with the game eventually falling in Murray State’s favor 88-79. Sophomore Malcom Smith had 22 points for the Bisons, and Junior Khion Sankey secured 12 rebounds and six assists. On Friday night, the men’s team will play the 3-2 Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles in Allen Arena at 6:30p.m. Next Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. will complete this year’s Battle of the Boulevard series at Belmont. The Bisons will host UT Martin next Saturday at 6:30 p.m, and will play at Rupp Arena against the no. 8 Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday, Dec. 15. Road games against Austin Peay and Memphis will take place over the break, with conference play beginning in Jacksonville against North Florida on Dec....
