Michael Buckland will play the fourth postseason game of his Lipscomb career Wednesday night when the Bisons take on North Carolina State in the NIT quarterfinals. And, conveniently, that will allow the North Carolina native to play in front of his family and friends yet again. Buckland, who hails from High Point, has family scattered across the state, so each postseason game has offered a slightly different group of people a chance to see him in action. “Every time that we’ve had these games, it’s been in a different place in North Carolina,” he said. “I’ve had friends and family at all of them, but I’ve had different people at every game.” Lipscomb played North Carolina in Charlotte in the 2018 NCAA tournament, and the Bisons played two more postseason games in the Tar Heel State last week when they beat Davidson and UNCG in the first two rounds of the NIT. UNCG is less than 20 miles from High Point, so the Buckland family opened their home to the Bisons last Friday for a night of food, ping-pong, pool and March Madness. The arrangements were made on short notice because Lipscomb did not find out the date and time for the UNCG game until Wednesday afternoon. When Lipscomb Director of Basketball Operations Adam Notteboom asked Buckland for restaurant recommendations, the Lipscomb junior offered his house as an option. School history was made when Lipscomb freshman men’s golfer Dawson Armstrong was selected to compete in the 2015 NCAA Division I men’s golf championship. As the Atlantic Sun Conference Newcomer of the Year, Armstrong is one of 45 individuals chosen to advance to Chapel Hill, North Carolina regional hosted by the University of North Carolina at the University of North Carolina Finley Golf Course. “I am glad I have the chance to represent Lipscomb,” Armstrong said. Armstrong said hopes he can continue his success into the NCAA tournament and show how Lipscomb athletes can compete with the best players. “With college golf, anyone can be just as good as you are,” Armstrong said. “You have to play your best, and sometimes your best is not good enough against college competition.” Armstrong said he has pushed himself to play his finest golf game no matter what the competition is like. Armstrong’s skill has set him up to meet the goals he and Lipscomb head men’s golf coach Will Brewer made at the beginning of the season. “Coach Brewer knew what my goals were going into the season and knows that getting there is a process,” Armstrong said. “He has helped me see the big picture and knows that I have to take each goal little by little and figure out how I can achieve what I have set out to accomplish.” Armstrong will head to North Carolina from May 14-16. The return of the Bisons’ most-honored player, a deep bench and two freshmen contending for playing time are just some of the reasons Coach Scott Sanderson is excited about the 2010-2011 basketball season. His team received a scare during the off-season, when star post and reigning A-Sun Player of the Year, Adnan Hodzic, initially declared for the NBA draft. Hodzic withdrew, and with him and 10 more players returning from last year’s team, the Bisons look to build on their 17-13 regular season, 14-6 conference records. The coach views the non-conference schedule as “a byproduct of getting us ready for league play.” Highlighting the Bison non-conference schedule this year are games against North Carolina, Memphis, Alabama, and Baylor. “We’re not going to go into any venue in our league that’s going be as tough as North Carolina, Baylor, Alabama or Memphis,” Sanderson said. “I feel like we can compete in those games. The last couple of years we have won a couple of them and have been competitive in all of them.” The Bisons will open their season against North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and the game will be televised on Fox Sports South. The Bisons have added three freshmen to the roster this off-season. Carter Sanderson, Coach Sanderson’s son, will be red-shirting this season as he gets familiar with the system. Robert Boyd, a point guard out of Fulton High School in Knoxville, could push for some playing time this season. “He’s a great defender,” Sanderson said. “He’s a pass first, shoot second type of point guard.” Finally Demarius “D.D.” Smith, 6-foot-4 guard from Kenwood High School in Clarksville, might also see playing time this...
