Lipscomb’s softball team showcased its talents on the mound and over the plate in a 13-0 victory over UNF on Sunday to clinch the weekend series 2-1. The two teams split the doubleheader on Saturday, with UNF taking game one 8-6 and Lipscomb taking game two 3-1 thanks to a three-run homer from Jenna Pealor in the sixth inning. Lipscomb is now 23-12-1 (3-3 ASUN). North Florida drops to 20-12 (3-3 ASUN). Saturday’s second game marked the first win of the season from the mound for junior Chloe Yeager. “She’s finally back to old Chloe, which is huge,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. She followed up the win on Saturday with another on Sunday in a standout performance where she gave up only one hit, walked only one batter and struck out three in the five innings available before the game was ended due to the run rule. The Lipscomb offense started off Sunday’s game strong and appeared to have solved the scoring issues it faced in Saturday’s second game. Hannah DeVault and Pealor shared 5 RBIs in the first two innings, with a sixth coming from Sarah Higgins. “We just really attacked the ball and attacked good pitches from the get-go today,” Ryman said. “We created a little bit of havoc today on the bases, too, with quite a few stolen bases and were able to get a lot of runners in scoring position for those girls in the middle of the order.” The Bisons followed up two strong innings with seven more runs in the third. It was almost a perfect conclusion to an already special weekend for the Lipscomb softball team — almost. After winning the first two games of the three-game conference series on Saturday, the Lady Bisons were upended by the North Florida Ospreys 7-6 on Sunday afternoon at Draper Diamond at Smith Field. Despite a late rally in the sixth and seventh innings, the Lady Bisons came up short in the end of the last game. “We did a good job late in the game with runners on, but not early in the game,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “It stinks that six runs is not enough. I think we should have capitalized on some things earlier in the game but we didn’t.” Lipscomb had no problem getting on base, as they recorded nine hits total, but couldn’t quite finish the job when they needed to. “We can’t leave bases loaded twice in the first five innings,” Ryman said. “That was a killer.” Despite the loss on Sunday, Ryman was optimistic about the two wins on Saturday. “We’re at the point of the season where every game matters,” Ryman said. “That is a positive takeaway.” The Lady Bisons were led offensively by senior Paige Neely and freshman Abby Fenichel who each had three hits while junior Baylee Williams added two of her own. Williams and junior Brittany Elmore also led the way with two RBI’s a piece. In the circle, junior Kelly Young was accredited with the loss. While most Lipscomb students were on spring break, the men’s and women’s tennis teams were hard at work starting Atlantic Sun Conference play. The men’s tennis team started off their spring break with a strong 6-1 win over the University of North Alabama on March 18 at home. The Bisons won two of the three doubles matches to get the winning point, and in singles action, the Bisons dominated. Sophomore Rob Mitchell, freshman Alejandro Manzanares, freshman Philippe Courteau, junior John Tougher and freshman Thais Minet all won their singles matches outright. Following the dominating performance over North Alabama, the Bisons looked to take the momentum into their first conference match against the University of North Florida on March 19. However, the men fell short in their first conference outing. The men lost 4-1 with the only singles victory coming from Mitchell, and the team did not win a doubles point. While the men were busy with their week, the women’s team was just as hard at work. The women started off the week on March 17 against Western Kentucky hoping to get a win before conference play, but the team fell short, losing 4-3. The Lady Bisons hoped to make a quick turnaround from the loss when they also took on UNF at home on March 19, but they fell 4-0 to the Ospreys. After a five game losing streak, the Lady Bisons came up short with conference rival North Florida 57-54. In the beginning of the first half, the North Florida Ospreys came out with a vengeance on the defensive side, leading with 14-6. The Lady Bisons made a run towards the end of the first half with seven minutes left, bringing the score to 22-17. Senior Sara Bliss caught fire with an onslaught of three pointers, leading the Lady Bisons with 36-32 and contributing 22 points. Going into the second half, the Ospreys slowed the game down, but came back into the last 11 minutes leading 44-41. With under five minutes left in the second half, Lipscomb’s defense rallied, bringing the game to a tie. Junior Danay Fothergill shot a three pointer in response to a North Florida layup, making the score 54-53. With 40 seconds left, Ospreys’ Paulina Zaveckaite made a layup, bringing the score to 55-54. With an attempt to answer back, junior Ashley Southern missed a layup and fouled. The Ospreys made their last two free throws to lead, finishing the game with 57-54. Lipscomb’s men’s soccer team ended its season Friday night in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, but despite the loss the team did finish with a successful season. The Bisons had the home field advantage for the tournament after they earned the right by tying for first place in the A-Sun regular season with a 4-1-1 record, 12-4-1 overall. It was the first ever regular season championship for the men’s team since joining the conference. Not only did the Bisons receive team acknowledgements, but also individual players were recognized by the Atlantic Sun. Senior Luke Gearin was named the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year, and freshman Ivan Alvarado was Freshman of the Year. The team had five players on the Atlantic Sun All-Conference team. The Bisons entered the tournament with high expectations based on their season record, but unfortunately they couldn’t pull through. The men lost 3-0 to North Florida who eventually won the tournament championship. The Bisons matched up against the Ospreys on a freezing evening this past Friday. The weather was easily one of the biggest challenges that each competing team faced during the tournament weekend. Despite the below freezing temperature, fans showed up to support the Bisons and cheer them on. “The weather was definitely something to deal with for all of the teams,” senior Zander El-Hindi said. “It speaks volumes to us as a team that our fans cheered us on for ninety minutes in twenty-degree weather.” UNF took the lead early on in the game scoring their first goal only nine minutes in.
