Inflatables, spike ball, badminton, and a lot of Fanta later, students are just one day from beginning their college experience at Lipscomb. Every year the quest team host an event called “Fanta Fest.” The event takes place in the yard between Ezell and Beaman, and students spray each other with cans of Fanta while going down water slides, playing games, running around and dancing to loud music and just having a good time. Later in the evening students had a paint party called the “Paint the Herd”. Students received a free t-shirt, danced to music from a DJ and throw colored paint powder all over each other. Good music, the people I love and a reason to cause a mess and not have to worry about it. Lipscomb’s annual Paint the Herd was in full swing, and not just with the usual paint, but also glitter and zombies. This event allows students to come together and have a good time. Before even seeing the parking garage, where Paint the Herd was located, I could clearly hear blasting music. Before actually entering the “rave” area — covered in tarps from top to bottom — everyone was given a white paint suit. And upon entering, I was greeted by strobe lights, music that you couldn’t help but dance to and the most important component of the night: paint. “I look forward to Paint the Herd every year,” said senior Kenny Smith. “It’s definitely a tradition for myself and my friends.” You could tell that many others had that same mindset, and why wouldn’t they? This event occurs on the hill end of the semester, and allows students to have a break from strenuous studying for an evening. “It’s an amazing event,” said senior Joe Sanderson. “So fun. Glad I made the decision to finally go and get the opportunity to be carefree.” Paint the Herd was a hit, and will be something that will stick around for the long haul. As October comes to an end, Halloween isn’t the only thing on the mind of Lipscomb students. Many highly anticipated events are returning this fall and promise to bring even more fun and excitement. Paint the Herd returned Friday, Oct. 25, in it’s fourth year under the sponsorship of the Lipscomb Student Government Association. Student Activities Director Louis Nelms said Paint the Herd started his junior year in 2010 at Lipscomb University, and it has been a hit every year since. “It’s one of Lipscomb’s bigger events,” Nelms said. “There is always several hundreds of people there. It’s going to be one students talk about for a while. It’s one that students look forward to all year.” “It’s fun, it’s this Friday, and it’s going to be a blast,” he added. Paint the Herd isn’t the only exciting event that has been planned. The always popular annual dodge ball tournament put on by Campus Ministry is also just around the corner. This years ninth annual tournament is comes back to campus on the first of November in Bison Square. “It started off as just a goofy event for people to dress up around Halloween and play dodge ball and it sort of evolved into this massive celebration of what I think is the Lipscomb culture,” Nelms said. “I always tell people there is two ways to win dodge ball. One, you can win the actual tournament and you take a trophy home, but no one remembers you. Before the semester becomes too overloaded with events and calendars gets completely booked, Lumination would like to offer a handy guide to all of the events coming up during the fall semester. September looks to bring a full slate of men’s and women’s soccer games. Pledge week also kicks off in September as Bid Night took place Sept. 12. Some of Lipscomb’s most anticipated events begin in October starting with the Tau Phi Cowboy show on Oct. 5, Paint the Herd on Oct. 30 and Haunted High Rise scaring students on Oct. 30. The women’s volleyball schedule kicks into high gear during October as well. Lipscomb’s annual Dodgeball tournament will start November off with a bang. The men’s basketball team will open up their season against Belmont with the Battle of the Boulevard against rival Belmont on Nov. 8, followed by the women’s Battle less than a week later on Nov. 14. Everything from sporting events across all sports to special Student Activities Board sponsored events, to usual favorites like Wednesday Night We Eat are taking place throughout the next few months, making Lipscomb’s campus a busy place. Lipscomb’s Student Activities Board has been working hard this summer to create a full slate of events to entertain students during the fall semester, including some usual suspects and a concert with a noted local musician. Thanks to the partnership with SAB, SGA, Campus Ministry and Lipscomb Athletics, there is some sort of activities planned every day of the week throughout the fall. If you take a look at the schedule, you’ll recognize some of the main attractions that come up every year: the Dodgeball Tournament, Paint the Herd, and the Running of the Bison. In addition to the normal events, SAB added more events with the help of their on campus partnerships. SGA President Andrew Hunt has been working alongside SAB to create more events every week on campus. “Besides some new events, the only major difference for this semester is that we’re working a lot more closely with SAB,” Hunt said. “We hope that splitting the cost of events will help both of our budgets go further, so we will be able to have more, higher-quality events.” Local musician Dave Barnes will kick off Homecoming Week in concert on Oct.1 at 7 p.m. in Collins Alumni Auditorium.
