Riley Hoag reflects on her time in Lipscomb’s IDEAL program

During my time at Lipscomb, I was a student in the IDEAL Program. When I began my first year moving into the dorms, I didn’t know anyone who was a student or who was in the program. I was excited about finally being able to get a real college experience and making new friends after moving from another state. My experience during Quest Week didn’t exactly go as I wanted it to be. It was hard being able to make friends with the freshmen who were already younger than I was. When I started classes I was able to meet new people and get to know them. One day in class we were talking about photography and after the class one of my classmates took me to meet the Lumination editor-in-chief. I had expressed interest in taking pictures for Lumination Network. I started getting assigned sporting events to take photos for. I had started making a few friends and then IDEAL assigned peer mentors for the IDEAL students. Two of my mentors happened to be on the women’s soccer team and I had no clue until one night I was taking photos for one of their games.                     Riley with Lumination Network editor-in-chief Mckenzi Harris                     Riley with her IDEAL peer mentors from the Lady Bisons soccer team   I started becoming good friends with my mentors, players on sports teams, and students in my classes. Most of my favorite memories are with my friends on the soccer team because we...
Student discovers talents, launches business

Student discovers talents, launches business

For some, balancing work and hobbies may be a lot to handle, but for one Lipscomb student, selling the products of two hobbies is her job. Freshman Jamie Pratt got her first taste of photography when she was young and quickly developed a love for being behind the camera. She eventually reached out to assist other Nashville photographers, which lead to photographing weddings. While this was something entirely new to Pratt, she realized she had uncovered a new passion. “[Wedding photography] wasn’t my end goal, but they are probably one of my favorite things to shoot,” Pratt said. “It’s just such a fun atmosphere and there’s so many different aspects to take pictures of.” Pratt’s photography business took off from there, as she built her client base and sold more of her work. She decided to put her photographic talent on display by building a website. Aside from photographing weddings and snapping candids, Pratt said she also enjoys landscape photography. “Capturing that moment with nature or something and getting that split second, where, if you’d waited a little longer, the picture wouldn’t have turned out,” she said. Since Pratt launched her website, more photos having been selling and business is picking up. Pratt’s talent doesn’t stop with photography, though. She also sells paintings and hand-painted shoes. Pratt said that she did not know she could paint until her senior year in high school. She said her paintings are usually inspired by photos she has taken or places she has been. “I just like the things that have little details,” she said. “It’s always humbling when I can never get them...

[Photos] Campus enhancements conclude as students prepare to return

Students will notice some obvious changes to campus when they return in August, as most of the summer enhancement projects wrap up in the next few weeks. Tom Wood, director of campus enhancement, said he thinks the improvements will have “the wow effect.” Besides the addition of Lipscomb’s nursing building on the north side of campus, transformation of the student center will be one of the most major changes students may notice. The university bookstore and Uncle Dave’s have moved to the lower level of the student center in the old Arlo’s location. Auntie Anne’s and Zebi will be in the former bookstore space. There will also be a lounge area with new carpet, booth seating, extra tables and chairs, and a small performance stage in one corner. According to Wood, the food court area will have new floor tiles, and new tables and chairs by the time classes start. “There’s a lot of interior improvements to the student center,” he said. “I think it will be something they will really enjoy. I think there are some great things happening in the student center.” The nursing building is on schedule to be ready for the fall semester, Wood said, and will be an “exciting” thing for the university and the nursing program. “It’s really going to enhance our nursing program tremendously,” he said. “We have 120 nursing students who will be studying in there this fall, so that’s a big improvement over last year’s enrollment in nursing. I think that will continue to grow.” Students living in Elam can look forward to renovations in that dorm. Wood said the rooms...
