It has been quite the journey for Lipscomb Academy as they have gone from not winning more than five games last season to finishing 5-5 and making it to the semifinals of the playoffs. However, it doesn’t get any easier for them as must now face district rival CPA away from home. The Mustangs played the Lions earlier in the season and lost by a score of 28-7. They also had multiple turnovers the last time they faced the Lions, most of them being interceptions. For CPA, they only finished the season with a 4-6 record, but are no easy foe despite that. The four wins that they got were all against district opponents while the losses came to opponents that were outside of the district. While it won’t necessarily be easier for the Mustangs this time around, Dilfer feels good about how much his team has improved since then. He also knows that they are going to have to play some of their best football to come out with a victory. “We are super excited for the challenge ahead of us Friday night vs CPA,” Dilfer said. “They are a really well-coached and a very physical football team. The Lipscomb Mustangs will head into their first playoff game of the 2019 season playing Boyd-Buchanan this weekend after a tough and enthusiastic year. “I’m excited for the playoffs,” coach Trent Dilfer said. “I think the regular season has hardened us in a good way.” Before the season opener, there were a lot of changes to the program. Dilfer, a former Super Bowl winning NFL quarterback, was named head coach and over 30 coaches were added to the program. Not only were there many coaching changes, but there were also over 20 transfers suiting up in purple and gold for the start of the 2019 season. The Mustangs finished with a 5-5 overall record as they prepare to face Boyd-Buchanan in round one. Dilfer says: “I think you have to judge the season somewhat contextually. A program that had won three games in two years — and we added 20-something new players to the program — and I think for all those reasons to be .500 is a big deal. I think, more importantly, I judge the season on the mentality, culture, and mindset and I think we made some radical changes.” Dilfer also shared his thoughts on how this season has shaped these young athletes into young men. Over 120 Nashville Predators fans waited outside of Signature Terminal in the early hours of Wednesday morning to welcome their hockey team back to the city the team calls “Smashville.” Why? Because It’s The Cup. The 2012 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs’ tagline is reason enough for fans to welcome their team back to their hometown at 1 a.m. after a game. However, the team gave the fans more reason to show up Wednesday. When the Predators landed at approximately 12:35 a.m. the team was fresh off two wins at Joe Louis Arena, the arena of the Detroit Red Wings. The two wins put Nashville (3-1) in position to win the series on Friday at their home rink, Bridgestone Arena. Some fans showed up as early as 10:00, knowing the team would not land for at least two more hours. The weather cooperated, but was by no means perfect at a misty, brisk, 52 degrees. The fans waited. Because It’s The Cup. When the team finally walked out the doors of the terminal, the inspired crowd gave each member of the hockey team as well as coaches, staff members and front office people an ovation that sounded like it could have easily came from 501 Broadway instead of 960 Hangar Lane. Why? Because It’s The Cup. Television news crews and folks with iPhones captured the moment when Predators enforcer Brian McGrattan walked through the line of people. When he was in college, the nation could not get enough of his ability to push his teammates through any situation. When he was drafted, the Broncos were ridiculed because his throwing motion was not that of an NFL quarterback. Now the media, college campuses, workplace water coolers and especially the Internet are buzzing with “Tebowmania.” In the AFC Wildcard game last night, Tebow completed 10 passes. That’s nothing compared to what Drew Brees or Matt Stafford did in their games, completing 33 and 28 passes respectively. But Tebow did something that neither of the two have done in their entire careers. He broke Twitter. Well, sort of. When Tebow threw the 80-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas on the first play of overtime against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Twitter exploded with over 9300 tweets per second. That was more than when Beyonce announced her pregnancy (8000+) and when Bin Laden was killed (5000+). Only adding to the shock and the excitement of the moment was Tebow’s final stat line. The Heisman winning quarterback had two touchdowns and a 125.6 (out of 158.3) QB rating, going 10-21 for 316 yards. That’s right, 316. Before entering the NFL where the rules do not allow it, Tebow wrote two Bible verses on his eyeblack – Philippians 3:14 and John 3:16. Beyond his football career, Tebow is changing the way people think about faith. Personally, I thought the comparing of stats and Bible verses was a bit over the top and absurd. However, now one day removed from the upsetting loss of my favorite team, I love that people are talking about Scripture....
