ASUN Semifinal Preview: Lipscomb, NJIT set to battle with championship spot on the line

ASUN Semifinal Preview: Lipscomb, NJIT set to battle with championship spot on the line

Just four teams remain in the ASUN tournament, and only two will still be standing after tonight. No. 1 Lipscomb and No. 5 NJIT will battle at Allen Arena at 7 p.m. Thursday, while North Florida and Liberty will clash for the other spot. The two semifinal winners will then meet for the ASUN tournament title on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT (TV: ESPN). The Bisons hold a 7-2 series lead over the Highlanders, but NJIT nearly pulled an upset on Lipscomb’s Senior Night on Feb. 25. Four late free throws from senior Garrison Mathews helped Lipscomb fend off NJIT’s furious second-half comeback attempt, and the Bisons pulled out an 81-77 victory. But on Jan. 16, the two programs met in Newark, New Jersey, and the result was much different. Behind 23 points from Rob Marberry and 17 from Matt Rose, the Bisons cruised to a 70-52 victory over the Highlanders. You can listen to tonight’s game LIVE HERE on Lumination Radio or watch it on ESPN+. BREAKING DOWN THE HIGHLANDERS: NJIT (21-11) finished the regular season on a sour note by losing six of its final eight games. But the Highlanders made up for that by upsetting No. 4 Florida Gulf Coast by a score of 83-78 in Monday’s ASUN quarterfinal in Fort Myers, Florida. Highlander guards Zach Cooks and Diandre Wilson were both outstanding and combined to score 51 points. Big-bodied forward Abdul Lewis, an ASUN first teamer, added 18 points of his own in 37 minutes of action. The victory was NJIT’s first postseason win in program history. The Highlanders joined the ASUN conference for the...
Predictions for all 29 Lipscomb men’s basketball games

Predictions for all 29 Lipscomb men’s basketball games

For the first time in a long time, the Lipscomb men’s basketball team is the favorite to win the ASUN title. The Bisons are seeking their second consecutive NCAA tournament berth with an experienced roster that includes five seniors and three juniors. Several of Lipscomb’s games could go either way — namely their contests against Belmont, Florida Gulf Coast and North Florida. The Bisons will also square off with Power 5 opponents in TCU, Clemson and Louisville. After looking into the crystal ball, here are my predictions for all 29 Lipscomb regular season games: Game 1: Lipscomb 95, Sewanee 60 (1-0) Nov. 6 at Allen Arena The Bisons may show some rust in the first half, as is typical in any season opener. The Tigers have built a solid D-III program, but they simply won’t have the depth to pull an upset. Game 2: Lipscomb 80, Tennessee State 68 (2-0) Nov. 10 at Allen Arena These two teams have played tight battles over the last several seasons, including a 95-86 overtime win by Lipscomb last year. Belmont alum Brian “Penny Collins” is taking over for Dana Ford, who left to coach Missouri State. With a new TSU coaching staff and a revamped roster, the score line won’t be as close. Game 3: Lipscomb 72, Belmont 61 (3-0) Nov. 15 at Allen Arena Battle of the Boulevard games are never easy to predict. Belmont’s Dylan Windler is one of the top players in the country, but the loss of Austin Luke and Amanze Egekeze leaves the Bruins a bit thin on experience – a problem the Bisons don’t have. Game 4:...

Lumination’s 2014 Oscar predictions

It’s that time of year again where all of the world’s movie nerds and pop culture aficionados rejoice.  This Sunday is the 86th Academy Awards. Lumination Entertainment Editor Logan Butts here with my predictions for the night’s major awards winners. Best Picture: 12 Years a Slave. With 13 months and hundreds of movies in the rear-view mirror, the race for best picture has been whittled down to three competitors: 12 Years a Slave, Gravity and American Hustle. At various points throughout the marathon that is awards season, both Gravity and American Hustle were the front-runners for the big prize, but now that it is time for the Oscars to finally happen, it looks like 12 Years a Slave has proven to be the film that will stand tall among a crowded Best Picture field. Best Director: Alfonso Cuaron. Gravity was undoubtedly the work of a director’s vision, and although Steve McQueen’s directorial work in 12 Years a Slave has just as many fans, I think Cuaron pulls out a victory due to the sheer magnitude of his accomplishment. Best Actor: Matthew McConaughey. In an unusually competitive race for this category, the “McConaissance” (the term McConaughey’s new career trajectory) will peak with a victory at the Oscars for his performance in Dallas Buyer’s Club. All five nominees could claim to still be alive for the win, but Chiwetel Ejiofor should provide the closest competition. Best Actress: Cate Blanchett. Despite a late run from Amy Adams multi-accented performance in American Hustle, Blanchett, for her work in Blue Jasmine, should already have her acceptance speech written. Best Supporting Actor: Jared Leto. Best Supporting...
