On her first day as Lipscomb University’s 18th president, Dr. Candice McQueen made several announcements during Tuesday’s Gathering. After introductions from SGA President Grant Hitchcock and her daughter, freshman Abigail McQueen, Dr. McQueen made her entrance on the podium. McQueen, greeted by a warm round of applause from the audience, cited the students as the primary reason for accepting this leadership position. “Lipscomb University exists for students,” said McQueen. “And we will empower our community, our administrators to make sure students are job one, and we will live out the visions of our founders to help you, our students, to be equipped to fully integrate with your academic passions and careers. McQueen made a few special announcements, such as the start of the President’s Student Advisory Council, otherwise known as PSAC. PSAC will allow McQueen to directly hear feedback from students through a collaborative effort with the SGA. Nominations for council members are ongoing, with the council set to be announced toward the end of September. To make up for the sophomore class’ lost opportunities, McQueen revealed that next week will be sophomore week. At the start of the week, sophomores will receive a gift package filled with an assortment of treats as well as tickets to events that lead up to an exclusive silent disco party. McQueen addressed and confirmed that the recent dining staff shortages and restaurant closures were due to a COVID outbreak. To make up for the inconvenience, students were treated to a cookout of hamburgers and hot dogs as an appreciation for their patience and willingness to cooperate with the staff shortages. Dr. Candice McQueen describes her return to Lipscomb as “very satisfying.” Her appointment to succeed Randy Lowry as president of the university brings her back to the campus where she has served as an academic leader as senior vice president and dean of the university’s College of Education. McQueen’s leadership at the school goes back to her student days when she was on the Quest Team, Lipscomb’s student-led orientation group, and also served as the first student coordinator of Singarama, the university’s annual student song-and-dance competition. As of September, McQueen will be tackling a new role at Lipscomb, that of the president. “When I was at Lipscomb, I was very involved, and so I enjoyed leadership roles and certainly roles that were focused on university things, but I can’t say that I’ve probably ever sat down and said ‘Oh, I see myself as the president,’” said McQueen in an interview with Lumination Network. “When you’re involved in leadership, you’re involved in doing things on the campus that you love. That should be a testament that you never know what might happen and certainly that was my case.” McQueen’s past is a stark contrast to that of current President Randy Lowry, who came to Lipscomb as a law professor from Pepperdine University in California. Earlier this spring, President Randolph Lowry announced the wrapping up of his 16-year run at Lipscomb. Now the university has launched a nationwide search, seeking to find a new president that stays true to Lipscomb’s values while embracing the new changes that’ll come in the post-COVID era. “Think of it as a skyscraper,” said Mitch Edgeworth, Vice President of the Board of Trustees and the leader of Lipscomb’s presidential search committee. “What we tend to see on a skyscraper is what’s above the ground, it’s the growth. That’s the new programs, recruiting students and recruiting faculty. That scaffolding gets put up and we keep growing, but you also need to have a deep foundation.” Edgeworth sat down with Lumination immediately following seven hours of “listening” to University and Academy voices. He said, “We really went through a series of questions and had a great chance to listen along the themes of what’s working well, that we don’t want to lose and what we want to keep going forward,” “Then there’s identifying the challenges that the university and or Academy are facing and how might we need to address and how might the next president need to address those challenges.” The factors going into the decision of ‘who’s Lipscomb’s next president?’ are consequential to the preservation of Lipscomb’s faith-based culture and the ability for the university to grow with the times. “We’re going to want a president who is both who’s equally talented at developing both the growth aspects as well as oversee operational efficiency,” said Edgeworth on the characteristics of potential candidates. “Also, a person deeply rooted in his...

Rising senior Drew Watson has been elected SGA President for 2014-15 school year. Watson, a rising senior, said he is really excited about his new position and is ready to serve the student body. “I knew it was going to be a close race and I’ve just had a lot of fun campaigning,” Watson said. “It’s been kind of stressful, but it’s been a lot of fun. “I am really excited to start this summer on some of the things that I talked about in the debate, specifically with the summer internships.” A runoff election will be held Thursday, April 10, for the vice president and secretary positions. Julia Allen and Seth Carey are the VP runoff candidates, while Jamie Keiser and Margaret Rox are the Secretary runoff candidates. Melissa Parrish was elected as treasurer. You only live once. This seems to be the common term used on campus these days. As cliché as it is, there is truth that comes from it. We only live once, and we are only in college once. Why not make it the best it could possibly be? That is simply the reason I am running for president. I’ve been a student here for three years. I have tried to experience just about everything that’s happened on campus. I’ve made so many meaningful relationships with students and faculty; I wouldn’t trade them for anything. I simply want every student to have the best year on campus they have ever experienced. A lot of you might ask how I am going to make that happen? Well, there is something wrong with that question. The question should be, how are WE going to make that happen? I think there is a slight misconception with role of the student government president. It is not a pedestal to sit on while just changing a few policies to make the students content. I believe that the president is a bridge that connects us to people and resources that can make our ideas a reality. I want to be that bridge so that every student can contribute to making next year an absolute blast. I’ve already heard some great suggestions from many of you, and I am eager to hear from any and every one of you that has an idea. Last question.
