Renovations to the student center are only a small aspect of the construction changes occurring at Lipscomb this summer. Tom Wood, director of campus enhancement, said the university will be spending about $11 million on new construction and renovations to existing areas. The list of construction and renovation work includes moving the bookstore and Uncle Dave’s to the lower level of the student center, developing a lounge area and installing a Zebis deli and Auntie Anne’s pretzels in the current bookstore space, updating McFarland by painting and furnishing the lobby and creating a “dean’s suite,” adding air conditioning in the SAC and McQuiddy gyms, creating office spaces in the basement of Burton, finishing the Cool Springs campus, installing a new track for the high school and university track teams, adding an academic resource center in the library basement and completing the nursing building. Wood said the bookstore will move to the Arlo’s location on the lower level of the student center, creating additional food service space in the current book store area. Wood said the new set up will have Auntie Anne’s and Zebis and a more private eating/lounge space. “It offers some additional food service area,” he said. “I think a lot of students have said they would like a place that is semi-private where they can have some booths and things like that where they can have a little bit of privacy instead of being out in the middle of a room some place.” In the next year or so, Wood said the university plans to extend the Starbucks porch area around the rest of the building....

In a letter to the Lipscomb community, University President Randy Lowry announced a major overhaul of the campus school. Thanks to donors Bill and Neika Stephens, the middle school will be moved from its current location to the site where the elementary school currently sits. The school will be a two-story K-8 building. In addition to the relocation of the middle school, a new campus school will be built on the property located between Granny White and the high school’s athletic complex. The $10 million donation is the largest ever presented to the campus school and the third largest to the Lipscomb community. The letter reads as follows: I am pleased to share with you an announcement we made last night to our friends and supporters at the Associates Gala. The Stephens Christian Trust, an entity founded by Bill Stephens, has challenged us in our Lipscomb:Next effort by making a $10 million gift for Campus School. This represents the largest gift ever made to the Campus School and the third largest gift ever made to Lipscomb University. The gift has been given to support the activities and programs of the Campus School, the largest K-12 independent school in Middle Tennessee. In addition to announcing that gift last evening, I shared a vision for the Campus School that includes a renovated elementary school to be joined at Harding and Granny White by a new middle school on that site. The vision also includes a new high school on property already a part of the institutional overlay...

The Fanning Hall 90 day renovation is now complete, and ready for students to make Lipscomb their home away from home. “Fanning has been patched and modified over the years, and after seeing many issues continue to rise, the senior leadership team decided to completely renovate the dorm over the summer, said Michael C. Green, The Vice president for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer. Though the framework of Fanning Hall is still intact, it’s the oldest female dormitory on campus to have a complete makeover. “The was a decision made to spend this summer redoing every room, every suite, and all the different amenities that are a part of that complex to do a total face-lift,” said Green. Fanning was renovated as part of the university’s Lipscomb: Next campaign, celebrating its 125th anniversary as a Christian institution. Construction crews and group leaders have been working around the clock to complete the project in three months – normally, it should take double or triple that time. “It was an operation that ran into the wee hours of the night and early morning,” said Green. “They pretty much ran everyday on a 24-hour schedule in order to meet the time frame.” Fanning will have completely new furniture, outside railings, air conditioning units, improved wireless internet connection, study rooms, state of the art exercise room and even a volleyball court in the courtyard. All this will take take those renowned Fanning Luaus to a whole new level. “As far as technology, I think it’s going to be as up to date as any of the residence halls on campus, “said Green....
