Lipscomb announced earlier this week the appointment of Dr. Al Sturgeon, a former Dean of Students and Dean of Graduate Programs at Pepperdine University, as the new Vice President of Student Life. Sturgeon’s appointment follows the departure of Scott McDowell. McDowell served as Lipscomb’s Vice President of Student Life from 2014 until last summer, when he took the same position at Abilene Christian University. President Lowry spoke about the “rigorous search” for a new Vice President in a letter to Lipscomb faculty. “We did not rely on just those applying for the position but sought to contact all in the field who might be a strong fit for the position at Lipscomb,” Lowry said. In a letter to students, President Lowry spoke about what made Sturgeon stand out from the other candidates. “Dr. Sturgeon has a passion for Christian education and for impacting the lives of young people and views the role of the Student Life office as integral to the learning process,” Lowry said. Sturgeon currently serves as the preaching minister for University Church of Christ in Malibu, California, but he will be relocating to Nashville in March. The Lipscomb community gathered for a time of mourning, remembrance and encouragement in the Doris Swang Chapel Sunday night after the passing of student Jared Eubanks. Eubanks died Monday, Sept. 7, after a lengthy illness. He was a senior nursing major from Hendersonville, Tennessee and lived in High Rise men’s residence hall. Eubanks was also a member of men’s social club Sigma Iota Delta. Among several SID members in attendance was President Braden Davidson, who read a note from one of Eubanks’ close friends. “Jared [Eubanks] was the type of person who would never think about himself,” he read from the note. “He put others first in everything he did and would go above and beyond for everyone, no matter how well he knew them.” One of the ways Eubanks exhibited this trait was through his studies in Lipscomb’s School of Nursing. Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Roger Davis said Eubanks’ life touched many on campus. Davis shared that Eubanks had qualities that couldn’t be taught — empathy, compassion and love and desire to share his knowledge and skills with others. Davis said these are signs of a true professional in the health sciences field, but these qualities were not strangers to Eubanks. “In the past year, he has taught our students, our faculty and our staff across campus, but particularly in the school of nursing, what it means to be a true professional,” Davis said. “He will continue to be an example for our school, our university and for every person who comes through our nursing program here.” School of Nursing officials “pinned” Eubanks with a nursing pin and white coat — that...

Lipscomb’s Veteran Services hosted a Veterans Eve Celebration that involved a parachute demonstration onto the quad Monday morning. The 101st Airborne Division, the Army’s oldest parachute jump team, flew through the air above campus before two jumpers, one carrying a POW flag and the other the American flag, descended onto the field. Students and members of the community lined the sidewalks around the quad in front of the Burton Science building to watch the demonstration. Prior to the jump, the national anthem was performed by the Lipscomb Jazz Ensemble. Then Lipscomb student and Marine Corps Corporal Matt Proctor gave the invocation. As part of the ceremony, an American flag was presented to veteran Christopher Long, and a Tennessee state flag was presented to Dean Scott McDowell. Before the end of the ceremony, Lieutenant Colonel John Sapp spoke about the event and about the importance of Lipscomb’s Yellow Ribbon Program that allows veterans to come home and receive an education. He also talked about being thankful for veterans as well, and Dean McDowell closed out the ceremony with a round of thanks. Lipscomb’s Yellow Ribbon Program works hard to create an encouraging and beneficial community for veterans. Corporal Proctor talked a little bit about how they hope to build a connection between veterans and traditional undergraduate students. “There’s an opportunity for those undergraduate’s to see the life experience that veterans have, and the face of war is sometimes very different than the faces of a traditional undergraduate student,” Proctor said. “There’s a lot that can be learned in order to communicate outside of the undergraduate experience.” Proctor was also very...

The Lipscomb community is mourning the death of recent Lipscomb graduate Meghan Day. Day, a May 2013 graduate and fashion merchandising major, died suddenly on Wednesday. a May 2013 graduate and fashion merchandising major Day was active in campus events as a member of social club Delta Omega. She also participated in the 2010 Lipscomb in Vienna Global Learning program. The Lipscomb community came together Thursday night in Ezell’s Swang Chapel for a time of prayer and remembrance. Attorney Josh Roberts will be joining the Office of Student Life as the new dean of student development, per the university. Roberts will be taking an active role in providing guidance for various student organizations and serving as the student life liaison for Lipscomb’s counseling center. Senior Vice President for Student Life Scott McDowell said he champions Roberts’ addition to the Lipscomb community. “Josh brings a great deal of passion and expertise to this role of developing students in a holistic way,” McDowell said to Lipscomb’s website. “His legal background will also be an invaluable resource as we navigate an increasingly complex higher education landscape where government regulations continually proliferate. “He will dedicate himself to mentoring a new generation of leaders as Lipscomb continues its commitment to equipping students to discover their created purpose and to embrace their place in the kingdom.” Originally from Nashville, Roberts received his undergraduate education at George Washington University and his law degree at the University of Memphis School of Law. Roberts said he plans to use his new role to help Lipscomb’s student leaders grow. “I am overjoyed to be joining the Lipscomb family at this remarkable time,” Roberts told Lipscomb’s website. “There’s not another university in the country that has more fully dedicated itself to developing students into leaders.
