Rising senior Drew Watson has been elected SGA President for 2014-15 school year. Watson, a rising senior, said he is really excited about his new position and is ready to serve the student body. “I knew it was going to be a close race and I’ve just had a lot of fun campaigning,” Watson said. “It’s been kind of stressful, but it’s been a lot of fun. “I am really excited to start this summer on some of the things that I talked about in the debate, specifically with the summer internships.” A runoff election will be held Thursday, April 10, for the vice president and secretary positions. Julia Allen and Seth Carey are the VP runoff candidates, while Jamie Keiser and Margaret Rox are the Secretary runoff candidates. Melissa Parrish was elected as treasurer. Elections will be in the Bennett Campus Center from 12-3 p.m. Below are the list of elected senators, from SGA’s email sent to the student body. SGA announced on Wednesday that Andrew Hunt had been elected as the new President of Lipscomb’s Student Government Association. Hunt will take over the position previously held by Patrick Grace. Drew Watson was announced as the new Vice President, the SGA title Hunt held this past school year. Julia Rox will once again hold the title of Secretary, while Melissa Parrish won the title of Treasurer. Hunt expressed his excitement in the victory. “I was really, really nervous going into it, and I really had no idea what to expect,” Hunt said. “But I’m really, really excited.” Hunt shared a couple of the tasks he hopes to accomplish in his first days as the new SGA President, among those being the need to finalize the new addition of off-campus meal plans. “We’ve still got some stuff to nail down about off-campus meal plans, so I’m really going to try and finish that up,” Hunt said. Hunt also said that he hopes to establish an SGA presence on the university’s Board of Trustees. Saying he was both surprised and excited about his win, Watson also shared his hopes for next semester, underlining his desire for improved communication between SGA and the student body. “I really want to work on communication,” Watson said. “We’re going to start by getting the word out and accepting ideas from the student body.” Kaley Greene was named Miss Lipscomb, while Tyler Osborne was named the Bachelor of Ugliness. The Capitol Mall, the Lincoln Memorial and the White House will substitute for the classroom Feb. 25-March 2 when 40 law, justice and society students observe and interact with the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government in Washington, D.C. The trip is one element of the Introduction to American Law class taught by Dr. Charla Long. By visiting the capital, students will be able to experience the legal processes they are learning about in textbooks. The tour schedule is packed, but there will be free time to allow the students to discover the city for themselves. A mandatory photo scavenger hunt is planned to guide students to the most important places in Washington, D.C. Students will also be required to keep a daily journal recounting what they learned that day to assist them with the final paper due after the trip. Fresh off the plane, students will head to a moonlight walking tour of the mall. Here, they will see the U.S. Capitol, the U.S. Supreme Court, the Smithsonian, and the Washington, World War II and Lincoln monuments. “I am excited to see American history from my own perspective,” said sophomore Brooke Brennan, an LJS major from Old Hickory, Tenn. Other plans for the group include a visit to the National Archives, Arlington National Cemetery and the U.S. Holocaust Museum. Seats have been confirmed for all students at U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments and they will also tour the White House.
