COLUMN: Asadullah makes his mark in Lipscomb rout

The last time the Lipscomb men’s basketball team took the court, it was for the school’s NCAA tournament debut against powerhouse North Carolina. Center Ahsan Asadullah was forced to watch that game on the bench while rehabbing an ACL injury. But on Tuesday night, the 6-foot-9 big man made his presence felt by leading the Bisons with 26 points in a 97-53 drubbing of Division-III Sewanee at Allen Arena. The Tigers more closely resembled a strong high school squad than a college team and were simply outmatched from the beginning, despite Lipscomb not being at its best. “It definitely helped,” Asadullah said of playing a weaker opponent. “We got to run some of our sets and stuff instead of [just] practicing against each other. [But we] knew it wasn’t going to be easy even though [they] were a D-III school.” Asadullah admirably filled in for Rob Marberry, who missed the game due to a hand injury. It’s unclear when the senior forward will be back in action, which could pose a problem in next Thursday’s Battle of the Boulevard against rival Belmont. “He’ll probably be back soon – he’s been practicing,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said of Marberry. “We know we need him for us to be as good as we can be.” Asadullah missed the entirety of the 2017-18 season after tearing his ACL last fall, and he said he felt some nerves during warmups. But you wouldn’t have known that by watching his nearly-flawless performance. “A couple of us were a little nervous,” Asadullah said. “I know I was a little nervous. My first shot got blocked,...

Men’s hoops makes quick work of Sewanee for season-opening win

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team didn’t take long to clinch their first win of the 2018-2019 season. The Bisons handily defeated Sewanee by a score of 97-53 at Allen Arena Tuesday night. “Overall I’m definitely pleased,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “A nice margin [of victory] and everyone got to play pretty significant minutes. I felt like the mentality we had for most of the game was pretty good.” It appeared the Bisons needed to knock off some rust in the first few minutes of the game as they struggled to find their rhythm. “From game to game there are going to be stretches where you are not performing quite as smoothly as you would like, and it just happened to be the beginning of this game,” Alexander said. “We never really got in-sync offensively where we were shooting it well and scoring the ball at a high clip.” Redshirt freshman Ahsan Asadullah made his Lipscomb debut after suffering an ACL injury last year. He finished with 26 points and nine rebounds. “I don’t know if I was expecting 26 and 9,” Alexander said. “He played with a lot of poise. He never really rushed things, never really forced things… just kind of did his job, executed and delivered.” Asadullah said he was thrilled to be back on the court for his first game action since he graduated high school in 2017. “It’s been a long time… and I think over the whole course of the period since I’ve been hurt, and since the offseason workouts, and since the end of last season, we have really worked hard,” Asadullah...

Ford Ice Center opens for business

After cutting the ribbon on Sept. 12, the Nashville Predators look forward to the new possibilities the Ford Ice Center will bring to the Nashville area. The new facility includes two NHL-size rinks, an upstairs party area, a café and a Predators apparel shop. The organization is hoping Ford Ice will provide a place for people to learn how to skate as well as grow the game of hockey in the Nashville area. “This facility is amazing,” Predators intern Kayla Evans said. “I’m glad the organization had the chance to build this, and I’m excited to see hockey grow because of the Ford Ice Center.” Olympic Gold figure skater Scott Hamilton will oversee the Hamilton Skating Academy, which will provide classes for all ages to come out to Ford Ice Center and learn how to skate. Country music singer-songwriter Vince Gill plans to broaden the hockey horizon in Nashville by reaching out to children. The plan is to create a scholarship program funded at Ford Ice Center. The program will be designed to give children the opportunity to play hockey without the hurdles of equipment costs or ice time. As part of the grand opening, the Predators hosted a rookie tournament. Rookies from the Predators, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins played three games each. The tournament provided more preparation for NHL training camp. Hockey fans can also catch Vanderbilt, Middle Tennessee State University and Sewanee’s club hockey teams playing at Ford Ice Center. The three teams will call the new facility their home rink. Over 10,000 fans enjoyed the opening weekend. The organization cannot be more...

Basketball team to start practice out of town

The time has finally come for the Lipscomb Bisons men’s basketball team to officially begin practice. However, due to the Nashville Symphony using Allen Arena this weekend, the Bison will be begin practice out of town at the University of the South at Sewanee. The first practice will be held on Friday night with two to follow on Saturday. The weekend will wrap up with a practice on Sunday before the team heads back to Nashville. “I want there to be an emotional attachment among each other,” said Bisons’ coach Scott Sanderson. “That’s why on opening weekend we’re going to go out of town and practice and do some team bonding type of stuff.” Coming off of a 17-13 regular season and having won a share of the conference championship last year, many would feel that Lipscomb has accomplished a lot. However, Coach Sanderson feels differently. “In my opinion, and in the players’ opinions, we really haven’t done anything,” Sanderson said. “A lot of teams might be satisfied with winning a conference championship. Now obviously that’s exciting, but as you keep winning, your goals get higher and higher. “We have a lot of motivation and our preseason has shown that we have a lot of motivation to continue to go that one step further.” The players will be staying at a hotel on Sewanee Mountain. They will spend every moment of the weekend with each other, both on and off the...
