First Greek Life Prospective to be held Friday

For students planning to join a social club this semester, there is a new event in the mix. For the first time, Greek Life Prospective will take place at 5 p.m. this Friday in Swang. This new event is mandatory for all students who are interested in joining a social club. Senior and Vice President of Greek Life Makenzie Kanyuh said the event will provide students with a chance to meet each social club. “Greek Life Prospective will gather every student wanting to rush into groups, and every 20-25 minutes the groups will rotate to a new club,” Kanyuh said. She added that because the rush process has gone by very fast in previous years, social clubs believed this event would be beneficial to students who are looking to rush. “Social clubs wanted another chance to get to know girls, but also to make sure everyone gets exposed to every single club in Greek Life,” she said. Olivia Waldorf, freshman journalism and new media major from Manhattan Beach, California, agreed that this event will allow her the opportunity to get a feel for all the clubs. “I think that this event is a great idea,” Waldorf said.  “I went to the fall rush fair to become familiar with all of the clubs, and there were some booths I didn’t make it to. “I’m excited that I’m going to get to spend some time meeting new people from each club.” After Friday’s event, students must attend at least three open-rush events. Before Greek Life Prospective takes place on Friday, a rush fair will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday in...

Changes redefine core of Lipscomb Greek life’s mission

For the 2014 spring semester, Greek life on Lipscomb’s campus will be in the midst of a redefining stage.  In the continuation of a process that started during the 2013 fall semester, both the campus life and Greek life teams are coming together to make Lipscomb a better place. The campaign to redefine Lipscomb’s social clubs has been spearheaded by Sam Smith, the associate dean of campus life, and Sam Parnell, the head of Greek life. Together, along with the International Code Council, they spent all of last semester fine-tuning the new club definition into the version seen today. “We’ve gone through a redefining stage of what Greek life is and what it means to be a part of Greek life,” Smith said. “What we’ve tried to do is we’ve tried to stage the setting for Greek life to be viewed in a positive light. This is the most powerful organization on campus. We want students to see it for how powerful and how good it is and really impact the reputation that it had by redefining what it will mean to be a part of Greek life.” One of the main goals of the redefinition process is to erase any lingering effects of what Smith called “a nationwide bad stigma” when people think of Greek life for any college, including Lipscomb. The plan is to highlight all of the positive aspects of Greek life, as well as to show what it can bring to the Lipscomb community, including non-Greek students. “I think nationwide there’s a bad stigma with Greek life,” Smith said. “They’re the frats – the sororities...

Bid Night highlights

Social Clubs held their 2014 Bid Night in Collins Alumni Auditorium to kickstart pledge week. “Big night is the most exciting night,” said Pi Delta member Sarah McFarlin. Sigma Iota Delta member Cade Morgan calls bid night, “everything.” “It’s where we introduce who we are taking into our club and who’s going to be the future of it,” Morgan said. Each group did a roll-call activity and each pledge introduced his or her self on stage. The most memorable act of the night was by the pledges of Theta Psi, who inhaled helium before introducing themselves. Check out the photo gallery and video for a quick recap of the night, including Theta Psi’s skit. Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR. Lumination’s Top 10 Stories of 2013

Hello, Lumination readers! As we celebrate the beginning of 2014, it’s time to take a look back at some of the biggest stories at Lipscomb during the year that was – 2013.  Before we take a look at the year’s top stories, we take a moment to pause and remember those we lost in the past year. Former Lipscomb professors Axel Swang, Patty Dugger, Oliver Yates, and Bill Collins all passed, as did Lipscomb student Isaac Phillips and Bisons super fan Chuck Ross. We continue to pray for their families and friends. A few stories right on the heels of our top 10 list involved some special visitors to campus and two major, annual Lipscomb events, as well as a few people in new positions of leadership. U.S. women’s soccer team practiced at university field in February, drawing a large crowd of soccer fans and inquisitive Lipscomb students. In March, YouTube sensations Walk Off the Earth headlined the spring concert at Alumni Auditorium. In April, Singarama celebrated its 50th anniversary, and, in December, Lighting of the Green held its 9th installment. In 2013, we also welcomed Steve Davidson as a new campus minister and Jim Humphrey as the new director of security. And, in April, Andrew Hunt was elected to be the new SGA president. Drew Watson was elected as his VP. 10. Titans QBs Jake Locker, Matt Hasselbeck and Rusty Smith speak in The Gathering  In March, the three quarterbacks for the resident Tennessee Titans appeared in The Gathering to shed light on each player’s faith. It was a rare occurrence to have such high-profile guests for a Thursday chapel, but...
