Despite trailing for most of the game, Lipscomb was able to defeat Stetson 50-47 after forcing overtime late in the 4th quarter. Junior guard Jane Deason came out strong in the first quarter putting six points in the book for the Bisons in the first five minutes, but as has been the story for much of Lipscomb’s season, scoring droughts quieted the Lady Bisons for several minutes at a time, the longest of which occurred in the second and third quarters where Lipscomb had no points for 6 minutes, giving the Hatters their biggest lead of the afternoon at 10, 36-26. Luckily for the Bisons, although Stetson was able to take the lead for most of the game, scoring droughts of their own, as well as foul trouble from key contributors, kept the game low scoring. In the fourth quarter, Lipscomb slowly got into more of a rhythm and chipped away at the Lady Hatters lead. Junior Dorie Harrison and freshman Jordan Peete made several crucial free throws and layups to bring the game to one-possession before Deason’s three-pointer with one minute remaining in regulation forced overtime. Harrison, who finished the day as Lipscomb’s leading scorer with 18 points, kept her scoring going into the overtime period, getting all seven of the Bisons’ overtime points, and clinching the victory. The Lady Bisons will be in action again tomorrow at 1 PM against the reigning ASUN champion FGCU Eagles. The fourth-seeded Lady Bisons open conference tournament play Thursday afternoon in Kennesaw, Georgia against the fifth-seeded Stetson Hatters. In head coach Lauren Sumski’s first season, Lipscomb is coming off of one of their best seasons in recent memory, going undefeated at home for the first time in the program’s Division-I era. The Bisons enter the tournament with their highest seeding since the 2017-2018 campaign when they fell in the semifinals to the FGCU Eagles. A huge reason for the Bisons’ success is senior ASUN second-team senior forward Taylor Clark, who is averaging 12.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game for Lipscomb. Clark has been a leader on and off the court, and her versatility makes her an integral part of everything the Bisons do. Joining Clark as an ASUN honoree is freshman Jordan Peete, who has already made a huge impact with Lipscomb in her first season, averaging 9.3 points per game. For Lipscomb to advance, they will need to rely on Clark and Peete, as well as sophomore stalwarts Casey Collier and Jalyn Holcomb. Thursday afternoon Lipscomb will “host” the Stetson Lady Hatters in the one-site tournament location at Kennesaw State University. This new format was introduced to minimize travel in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 but will allow teams to have more consistency in between matchups. The Lady Bisons are going to have quite a challenge hoping to clinch the automatic NCAA tournament bid. The Lipscomb University women’s basketball team took on the Stetson Hatters Saturday afternoon in Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons won, 58-54. This win continues the Lady Bisons’ win streak at home. The win was the first for the Lady Bisons over Stetson at home since 2010. On Jan. 23, senior forward Taylor Clark became the 10th lady bison to score 1000 points in her career, joining the Lady Bisons 1000 point club. Clark added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Bisons’ win tonight, while freshman guard Jordan Peete was the leading contributor with 15 points. The Lady Bisons came in hot from the arc shooting threes to take a lead over Stetson, 34-26 in the first half. Peete went on a run early in the 4th, pushing Lipscomb’s lead to double digits in the final quarter. The Lipscomb volleyball team lost their six-match win streak to Stetson in an intense five-set battle in Allen Arena. The Hatters defeated the Bison’s 3-2. “Our message all week was about how good Stetson is defensive. Even though you know it’s going to happen, they do a fantastic job,” said head coach Brandon Rosenthal. The Bison’s got off to a hot start leading 16-6 early in the first set. The Hatter’s fought back to within two, but the Bison’s pulled out the first set 25-20. Set two started out in a very similar fashion. Lipscomb had the lead 17-10. However, Stetson’s defense wasn’t going to give up easily. A quick surge tied them 17-17. After a hard-fought set, the Hatter’s secured the set 27-25. “Set two was kind of weird. We just couldn’t get it done and unfortunately. I didn’t make a quick enough sub in a couple places, and they beat us down the stretch of set two,” says Rosenthal. After also losing set three the Bison’s made a comeback in Set 4. They made an offensive surge to secure the set 25-23. “Set 4 I thought we did a nice job, again, executing down the stretch wasn’t there, but that was the issue all day for us,” says Rosenthal. Lipscomb got out early in the fifth set leading 4-0. They eventually took kept their lead 10-8, forcing Stetson to call a timeout. Senior guard Garrison Mathews is rewriting the Lipscomb basketball record books. Thanks to a 20-point performance against Stetson on Saturday, Mathews eclipsed the 2,000-point mark for his career and passed Adnan Hodzic (2,002) as the school’s leading scorer in the NCAA Division I era, which began with the 2001-02 season. “I struggled my freshman year, and I didn’t think I’d be at this point when I got here,” Mathews said. “I knew I had to work hard, and I did. I’ve got great coaches and teammates that have helped me along the way.” Senior forward Rob Marberry led all scorers with 23 points, and freshman Jake Wolfe emerged as an offensive threat with 16 points in Lipscomb’s 95-71 thrashing of the Hatters in front of 1,388 Allen Arena fans. “The scoring was really spread out, which was awesome to see,” Marberry said. “Teams don’t really know how to guard us. They can’t tell if it’s going to be one guy’s night or another player’s [night].” Lipscomb (12-4, 3-0 ASUN) started slow, and Stetson held a 19-18 lead after nine minutes of play. But the Bisons finished the final 10 minutes of the first half on a 38-11 run to take a 56-30 halftime lead and quell any concerns of a Stetson upset. “When you create a margin like that at halftime, you’ve obviously played well,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “I was not pleased with the consistency of play.
