Pi Delta secures first place at ninth annual StompFest

The “Into the Jungle” theme brought Pi Delta first place at the ninth annual StompFest. “We worked hard,”said Pi Delta member Meredith Harris. “I think that we were really dedicated during our practices, so we didn’t have to practice as often… but when we were there we were focused.” “We had alumni come back and give us tips about what they did that worked and what didn’t work.” The group had been practicing since September, so they expected everyone’s best performance. “We talked about it before, and we agreed that there [could] be no errors,” said Harris.  “I think it was really good. We came off very confident, and I think as long as you are confident it doesn’t matter what your stepping looks like.” Theta Psi snagged second place with a biker theme, and Phi Sigma spies theme claimed third. The other themes included: Phi Nu Lumberjacks, Delta Sigma Cheetah Girls, Delta Omega Magicians, and Sigma Iota Delta JazzerSID. Avery Roland, one of the StompFest coordinators, said she loves to see the progress of the clubs.  “Getting to watch the show progress from the first run-through in Collins to their last run-through – that progression is phenomenal.” The audience of the sold-out show displayed plenty of energy, which pleased the show participants. “It is so much fun,” said Delta Sigma member Maggie Woodhouse. “The energy on the stage is literally the most fun thing ever.” “Sometimes it’s really frustrating when you have lock-ins or really long practices, but you have to think about the end goal. Being on stage and seeing all the people watch you and knowing that...

Coordinator of African American Services strives for unity

When Paulette Cathey first visited Lipscomb, she saw more diversity than she had ever seen.  Cathey, Coordinator of African American Student Services, realized that something different was happening at Lipscomb. Months later, a position at Lipscomb had opened up for the job that she has now. After receiving the job and working closely with students, her desire to create more unity strengthened. “I strongly believe that we as people tend to get so caught up in the differences of the world,” Cathey said. “Skin or eye color, and even our culture. But God being the perfect artist that He is, was only showing the world’s true beauty through variation. Instead of separation, he’s showing us all that we are much better within unity.” Last November, when Cathey took part in coordinating KIT’s annual StompFest, she saw her idea of unity take place behind the scenes and on stage. “Lipscomb was doing it differently,” Cathey said. “There were so many cultures coming together, to step and cheer for one another. I was in awe, because I was a witness to a spirit of unity.” For Cathey, StompFest was the first true illustration of unity on campus. For Black History month, Cathey does not want the student body to focus on just one race, but all of them instead. “The more diversity we bring, the more beauty we acquire here, and the more we learn. Just the thought of that is exciting and something that I strive...

Lauren King named 2014 Miss Lipscomb

Miss Lipscomb recipient Lauren King has a passion for people and for the university. A rising senior and Nashville native, King is a Bible major with a youth ministry and preaching emphasis. “I love Lipscomb a whole lot, and working for admissions has even grown my love for Lipscomb, just knowing more about our school and what we do and the effort that we put to get students here,” King said. At first, King did not expect to be able to come to Lipscomb. However, her involvement with non-profit Christian-based organization RAVE ministries opened up the opportunity to be a part of this campus. “I’ve just tried to make this experience as much as I possibly can with my involvement that I’ve grown on campus,” King said. “It’s just been awesome to be more involved in the community.” King gets to travel around to schools, churches and youth rallies to speak to teenage girls about gossip, self-image and sexual temptations. “My involvement in RAVE helped me find my desire for youth ministry and one of the reasons why I’m a ministry major,” King said, “I’ve gotten to meet some really cool girls around the country that I’ve gotten to build relationships with.” King enjoys building relationships with people both on and off campus. One of her favorite things about Lipscomb, she said, is the community. “I just know that it’s a dream for me to come to Lipscomb,” King said. “I love this community so much and what it means to me.” Besides working with Lipscomb admissions and RAVE ministries, King is also a member of social club Pi...
