Black History Month Trivia Night ends after Double Tiebreaker

Black History Month Trivia Night ends after Double Tiebreaker

Lipscomb kicked off Black History Month by hosting a Black History-oriented trivia Wednesday night. The event, which was held at the Bennett Campus Center, had students team up as they were tested on their knowledge of various people and events throughout Black history. The Office of Intercultural Development and the Student Activities Board worked together on forming the event. The two organizations had previously collaborated on numerous cultural events on campus, such as Welcome to Our World Week and Hispanic Heritage Month. For Britany Gonzalez, a Junior Law, Justice, and Society major from Memphis and OID Intern, the trivia night was a success. Especially since it was her first time hosting the event since she’s been an OID intern. “We had a pretty good number of people show up and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves,” Gonzalez said. “I would say it was an overall success!” Britany Gonzalez & Esteban Gonzalez After four rounds of trivia, the teams found themselves competing in two different tiebreaker rounds. Finally, Team “Goo-Goo Clusters” broke the tie by answering “When did Dr. Martin Luther King deliver his ‘I Have A Dream’ Speech?” correctly. The team was comprised of Abigail Gunter, a sophomore Nursing major from Raleigh, NC,  Dustyn Baker, a Junior Theology and Ministry major from Atlanta, GA, Dan DiGrazia, a Sophomore Theology and Ministry major from Elgin, IL, and Tim Earles, a Junior Mechanical Engineering major from Damascus, MD. The four students won tickets to The National Museum of African American Music and free merchandise for the museum’s gift shop. Baker, along with his teammates, was excited to win the trivia contest...

Students gathered Friday night in Bison Square for Salsa en el Square, a lively celebration of salsa dancing during Hispanic Heritage Month. A student instructor taught the groups several basic techniques. After the lesson, students got to show off their new skills with different partners. “I really enjoyed that there was enough structure there to show us what we were doing so we didn’t have to just … figure it out ourselves. … [The instructor] gave us ample amount of time to practice what she had taught us,” said JoAnna McCutcheon, a sophomore nutrition major from Southside, Alabama. Sarah Small, an IDEAL student from Zionsville, Indiana, added that the best part of the night was “learning new things.” Events like Salsa en el Square provide the opportunity for students to appreciate diverse cultural traditions and meet new friends in the Herd. “Everyone was there to have fun, everyone was there to dance, so … I liked going around and seeing who else didn’t have a partner and being like, ‘Hey! Let’s dance!’” said Anna Adams, a junior English major from Rogersville. “I think that was kind of always in my personality … but I think that the experience here [at Lipscomb] has kind of opened me up and opened that side of me.” Salsa en el Square was hosted by the Student Activities Board and Office of Intercultural Development and served as a continuation of events celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. SAB host the first annual Lipscomb Luau

SAB host the first annual Lipscomb Luau

Although the Fall semester has just begun, Lipscomb students are holding on to summer until the end. Lipscomb’s Student Activities Board hosted their annual Lipscomb Luau on Friday afternoon to kick off this year’s activities. The Luau featured upbeat Hawaiian music and a beach volleyball tournament in the sandpit behind Elam Hall. No matter the competition level, students put together their best players and registered in teams of four.  Each team was also encouraged to create crazy team names and matching uniforms, with “Sandy Cheeks”, “The Hobbits”, and “Fake Tan Squad” being the standouts. This year, the sand volleyball tournament was almost postponed due to rain, but the cloud coverage didn’t put a damper on the fun. “We just wanted to throw a fun event for new freshman on campus that makes the first weekend of college not as scary,” SAB member Madison Wonders said. “We want people to continue to meet each other, whether they’re playing volleyball or not, to come and grow the community.” Students were offered grilled chicken, pineapple, and Hawaiian Punch as refreshments throughout the match. The tournament ended full of smiles, laughter, and some friendly competition. The winners, Team Memphis Tiger Basketball Fan Club, received bragging rights and their picture on the SAB Instagram. SAB hosts first ever Swing in the Square

For the first time at Lipscomb, the Student Activities Board hosted a Swing in the Square event for students on Friday evening in Bison Square. While this function is new to campus, other similar events such as Theta Xi’s Full Moon Festival have been held in the past. “This is an event that we talked about doing in the spring,” said Louis Nelms, director of student activities. “Theta Xi, when they did Full Moon Festival, sort of opened the door to some of this stuff.” After approval, Nelms and his team began planning to make the night a safe, enjoyable time for all. “We had to have a place to swing, we had to have lights, we had to have music, and so we just decided to put this all together and thought how do we make this better, and that’s what happened,” Nelms said. Junior Josh Cottrill served as the DJ, incorporating big band music and more popular electric pop. “I’m mostly excited for the atmosphere and the liveliness that’s going to happen tonight,” Cottrill said. “I’m excited to see what comes about.” Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR. Students were instructed on proper swing dancing technique by theater professor Leigh Anne Ervin. After showing students some simple dance moves, Ervin stepped aside to let students show off some of their own moves. “It’s a lot of fun because everyone’s making a fool of themselves and dancing,” said sophomore Samantha Gwinn. Whether students had some background in swing dancing or were completely new to the style, Swing in the Square easily allowed students to join in community and learn. “You get to...

SAB debuts new weekly event Tuesday Night Treats

Tuesday nights on Lipscomb’s campus have gotten tastier, as the Student Activities Board announced and has already held a new event called “Tuesday Night Treats”, or TNT. The event, as Director of Student Activities Louis Nelms said, is SAB’s weekly event, held every Tuesday night from nine to ten and will feature a variety of food choices.” Nelms said that SAB was looking for new ideas for the upcoming school year when someone mentioned hosting a weekly event. SAB looked at other weekly events hosted on campus: Coffeehouse, Wednesday Night We Eat, Wednesday Night Devo, and found something doable that hopefully, as Nelms mentioned, would not create as much conflict with other events on campus or in the area—thus Tuesday Night Treats. Nelms also said that the future is bright for TNT. He hopes to partner with others for the event, whether it be a social club promoting a fundraiser, a Lipscomb sports team promoting a game or a local church. Tuesday Night Treats will be in its second week on Aug. 26, and if you want to check out the menu ahead of time visit lipscombsab.com. Under the TNT events, the menu will be...
