Christian music artists, fans and community members will return to Music City this fall to unite for the 46th Annual GMA Dove Awards show, “Better Together.” “Since 1969, the GMA Dove Awards has honored the outstanding achievement and excellence of our music community,” GMA executive director Jackie Patillo said in a press release. “We hope to bring much more light to our mission with this year’s ‘Better Together’ theme as we focus on unity, diversity and creativity and come together during this exciting time in our industry.” The awards show will be held under Lipscomb’s roof in Allen Arena for the third consecutive year on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The Gospel Music Association now calls Lipscomb home after holding the awards show in Atlanta. Most may know Nashville as home of country music, but it is now a hub for the Christian music industry as well. On Wednesday, Aug. 12, a press conference was held at which award nominations were announced and Mayor Karl Dean spoke about the importance of music in Nashville’s community. “Not only do we get to celebrate the diversity of the music in Nashville, but we also get to celebrate the fact that hundreds of music fans will be traveling here in October and they will get to see our city firsthand,” Dean said. “Music is one of the top econmic drivers we have. A few familiar faces will be joining show host Amy Grant at this year’s Lighting of the Green. The tenth annual show will feature American Idol finalist and Christian artist Danny Gokey, Dove-winning gospel singer and actress Tamela Mann, singer/songwriter Jon Guerra, multi-talented family The Willis Clan, Brother Parker, Lipscomb student choruses and others. Walt Leaver, vice president for university relations, spoke to the impact Grant has had on the show. “Lighting of the Green has become a beloved tradition in Nashville, and we couldn’t have made that happen without the support and generosity of Amy Grant, who gives of her time and talent to perform and to schedule an exciting slate of artists each year,” Leaver said. The free. rain-or-shine concert starts at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, on the Allen Arena Mall. Festivities will begin at 4, including the Merry Marketplace at the arena. Free photos with Santa Claus are also available. Food or cash donations will be accepted for the Second Harvest Food Bank at the event. By Bridgette Begle and Cory Woodroof Allen Arena traded basketballs for golden trophies Tuesday night as the best and brightest of Christian music gathered to celebrate this year’s Dove Award winners. The 44th annual show made its home at Lipscomb after spending two years at Fox Theater in Atlanta. Industry legends Amy Grant and Kirk Franklin were the evening’s emcees. Gospel Music Association CEO Jackie Patillo thanked Lipscomb for their guidance in hosting the event in its return to Music City, a longtime home of the awards. “We are at the Allen Arena because of the vision of the leadership here,” Patillo said. “President Randy Lowry has opened his doors to us and his heart.” Dr. Lowry told the estimated crowd of 2,800 of the importance of having fellow believers join the campus to celebrate an art that ties directly in with faith. “We have about 200,000 visitors a year on this campus, but there are no visitors that are more important to us than those who share the Christian story with us,” Lowry said. “A lot goes on in higher education, and a lot of it is so far from the story we believe in. “But at Lipscomb University, we are going to be Christian intentionally, we are going to be Christian courageously and we are going to be Christian graciously.” Lowry noted that arena donors Jim and Linda Allen were in attendance of the evening’s events. “They had a vision 15 years ago and dedicated a tremendous proportion of their resources to build this – not knowing you specifically, but having you in mind. At most music-related awards shows, Artist of the Year is generally one of the biggest awards given out. The Dove Awards are no exception. Each year, the Dove Awards committee nominates the five artists who they believe were the most successful in the past 12 months for Artist of the Year, and this year’s nominees are one of the strongest groups ever. Chris Tomlin: One of the most successful Christian artists of all time, Tomlin received his seventh Artist of the Year nomination. For someone who has been nominated for a staggering 32 Dove Awards, and six Grammys as well, nominations no longer come as a surprise. The 44th annual Dove Awards is happening Tuesday night in Allen Arena. To prepare you for the evening’s festivities, here are some of the nominees for Song of the Year category, awarded to songwriters and publishers. “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord),” artist Matt Redman, writer Jonas Myrin This seems to be a church favorite. I don’t think there has been one church I have gone to this year that hasn’t used this song during worship. “The Proof of your Love,” artist For King & Country, writers Ben Glover, Jonathan Lee Australian-born, Nashville-based brothers Luke and Joel were named by Billboard as one of the “New Artists to Watch” for 2012. “Take me to the King,” artist Tamela Mann, writer Kirk Franklin Mann is a recipient of the 2011 Dove Award for Traditional Gospel album of the year. Her song “Take me to the King” topped U.S. Billboard Gospel Song charts for weeks straight. It was also nominated for a Grammy. “Whom Shall I Fear,” artist Chris Tomlin, writer Ed Cash Tomlin is a multiple Dove Award recipient. “One Thing Remains,” artist Kristian Stanfill, writer Brian Johnson I visited a church in Atlanta across the span of several months.
