Lipscomb Men’s Basketball finishes out 2019 home games with 78-60 win over TTU

The Bisons played their final home game of the year Tuesday night and pulled out a 78-60 win over the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles.  The Bisons were down by 14 points midway through the first quarter, but began to cut into the Golden Eagles lead and entered the second half down by only four. “They came out and got off to a good start, but we held our composure,” said Head Coach Lennie Acuff.  Tech really had the Bisons on the edge of their seats in the first half.  “I thought we were a little rusty, we’ve only played one game in two weeks,” said Coach Acuff. The second half was a completely different story. After gaining that rhythm, there was no stopping the Bisons. “I thought we got a good lift off the bench from several guys and played really well in the second half,” said Coach Acuff. Asadullah hit seven points in a 14-0 run for the Bisons early in the second half putting the Bisons ahead with a 53-46 lead. The Bisons shot 51% from the field and scored 30 points from the paint.  Coach Acuff’s hopes for the rest of the season remain high for the Bisons. “I think we’re getting better, I think when we play smart, play through Ahsan, good things happen. It’s good to have Buck back and get him in rhythm,” said Coach Acuff. “We’ve just gotta keep moving the needle everyday and keep getting better.”  “We’ve gotta get to where we don’t lose at home, we’ve just gotta keep getting better, home games have gotta be wins.” The Bisons play...

Lady Bisons fall to UT Martin Skyhawks 67-83

The Lady Bisons fought hard against the Skyhawks, but fell, losing 67-83 at the UT Martin Elam Center. The Lady Bisons shot well, 20-42, but just couldn’t seem to get into a rhythm during the game. The Skyhawk defense was tough and started pressing the second the Bisons got the ball.  The game went back and forth at the beginning, with the Bisons gaining a lead over the Skyhawks with a second-quarter 11-2 run.  But the Skyhawks quickly retook the lead 36-29.  Lipscomb cut UT Martin’s lead  to seven with five minutes to go, due to them shooting 71.4% in the fourth quarter. But the Skyhawks ended the game on a 15-6 run and walked away with a 83-67 win. Despite the loss, the Bisons shot 47.6% from the field overall, largely in part to the standout freshmen. The freshman trio of guards, Blythe Pearson, Jalyn Holcomb and Casey Collier, were responsible for almost 70% of the  team’s points.  Pearson dropped a career-high 20 points off the bench in her 24:51 minutes. Holcomb scored 16 points in her 38:31 minutes of playing time. Collier scored 9 points in her 34:29 minutes.   However, even these standout performances were not enough to give the Bisons the win, due in part to the crowd of over 4,000 students from area schools that packed into the arena providing a unique energy that seemed to keep Martin fueled throughout the game. This crowd was in attendance because of UT Martin’s “Kids Day” game where schools allowed kids to attend the game instead of class. Lipscomb is closing out 2019 with a trip to Tennessee Tech on...
Women’s soccer team falls thanks to penalty kick

Women’s soccer team falls thanks to penalty kick

The women’s soccer team was defeated by the Cincinnati Bearcats, 3-2 on Thursday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex, thanks to what would become a game-winning penalty kick. Cincinnati came into the game only having won one game this season; while the Bisons came in having won four of their last five games. The game started off with a goal by Bearcat forward, Han Tang, scored in the first three minutes of the game. The Bisons didn’t go away though; Lipscomb scored two unanswered goals before the first half was over. The first goal came off an assist by Bisons midfielder, Cami Rogers and scored by forward, Olivia Doak. The second goal came from an assist from almost midfield and again came from Rogers but this time to midfielder Kaitlin Echols who buried the shot. The second half was a different story for the Bisons. The Bearcats came out firing on all cylinders and scored the first goal of the half to tie it up. “It rattled us a little bit; it made it hard to answer at times,” Lipscomb coach Kevin O’Brien said about the way the Bearcats came out in the second half. After Cincinnati tied it up, they just kept pushing and eventually scored on a penalty kick thanks to a handball penalty. The penalty kick goal was scored by Tang, her second goal of the game. The penalty kick goal ended up being the game-winning goal for the Bearcats. The Bearcats outshot the Bisons in the second half, 12-4. “You got to give credit to Cincinnati, they were physical, tough, and in your face,” O’Brien...

High-scoring Bisons contribute to win over Tennessee Tech

Four Lipscomb Bisons scored in double digits in a 87-79 victory against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles at Allen Arena on Thursday night. Martin Smith, J.C. Hampton, Josh Williams and Malcolm Smith all broke the double-digit barrier. Junior forward Martin Smith led all scorers, putting up 24 points and going 12 for 14 from the free throw line. “I got to the free throw line, got my rhythm going and kept it going from there,” Martin Smith said. He credited his teammates on the evening’s accomplishments. J.C. Hampton had 19 points and was four for five from behind the arc. The redshirt freshman point guard said that that team wants to keep an up-tempo pace. “We want to play fast the whole game,” Hampton said. “We want to get out as quick as possible and get quick baskets. We practice hard to play fast.” Freshman guard Josh Williams had 20 points, a career-high for the new Bison. Malcolm Smith knocked down 11 points against the Golden Eagles and went four for five from the field. The win moved the Bisons to 4-4, while Tennessee Tech fell to 5-5. The game started out with a couple of fouls on each team, but the pace quickened, and with the fast pace, Lipscomb turned the ball over seven times in the first half, while Tennessee Tech had 11 turnovers. The turnovers lessened as the game went on, but Hampton says that team needs to be a little more careful with the ball. “[We need to] just slow it down a little bit, not being so passive and control the ball a little bit better,...
