With July, and the summer as a whole, almost in the books, The Postgame is here to gather all of the Lipscomb sports news from the past month. Lipscomb Track and Field: To cap off his freshman season, Phillip Smith competed at the USA Junior Track and Field National Championships on July 6 in Eugene, Oregon. Smith finished seventh overall in the triple jump competition. The recently graduated Tessa Hoefle added another honor to her achievements list after being named to the Capital One Academic All-American First Team. Hoefle owned a 4.0 GPA and won three A-Sun Scholar Athlete of the Year awards. As an overall squad, the Women’s Track and Field team ranks second overall in the nation for GPA. The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced that the team’s 3.61 GPA was good enough for second overall in the country. Lipscomb Softball: Rising junior Tanner Sanders pitched for the Central Virginia All-Stars. The team faced off against Team USA hopefuls in a pair of exhibition games in Lynchburg, Virginia. Sanders gave up five hits in six innings work during the two games. Kasey Gibson, a rising sophomore, got her own chance to play against elite competition. Gibson suited up for the Indiana Slammers, a team made up of college softball players from the Indiana area. The Slammers were able to play against the Netherlands National Women’s Softball Team in July, losing 6-5. Lipscomb Golf: Incoming freshman, and former Lipscomb Academy student-athlete, Dawson Armstrong qualified for the 2014 USGA Amateur Championship. Following a successful 2013-14 on-field campaign, Lipscomb has also come out on top in the classroom by being named the 2013-14 Atlantic Sun Academic Champions. During the 2013-14 school year, 78.83 percent of Lipscomb’s student-athletes finished with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, giving the Bisons the best percentage in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The percentage was not only the top in the conference, but it was the highest Lipscomb has posted during its time in the A-Sun. 211 Bisons were named academic honorees for the school year, which was also the best number in the Atlantic Sun. Not only was the mark good enough to lead the conference, it also raised Lipscomb’s all-time total to 1,285 honorees, the most of any school in the history of the A-Sun. In addition to the team awards, Lipscomb senior cross country runner Tessa Hoefle was named the 2013-14 Atlantic Sun Female Student-Athlete of the Year. She became the third Lady Bison to receive the distinguished honor. Hoefle also won her third consecutive A-Sun Women’s Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year. Hoefle, along with Joshua Kolbo and Claire Peterson, were named Presidential Scholars for finishing their careers with a GPA of 3.8 or higher. Fellow seniors Geoff Musick, Melissa Dowd and Caitlin Dotson received Commissioner Scholar awards for finishing with a GPA between 3.6 and 3.79. Student athletes and coaches filled the court of Allen Arena on Thursday night, but this time, it was not for a game. The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the inaugural Lippy Awards in Allen Arena to honor various members of Lipscomb University’s sports teams. The awards show was hosted by student TJ Ojehomon and women’s soccer assistant coach Chris Klotz. Both female and male athletes of the year were competitive categories, but for the female award, sophomore cross country/track and field runner Dani Walker and junior volleyball player Jewell Dobson tied. On the men’s side, track and field high-jumper Gemikal Prude, who broke the high jump record earlier in the year, won as well. Prude said that winning the award was a blessing. “Winning this is quite the blessing,” Prude said. “It’s a feeling that can’t really be described, especially when you feel as if you’re undeserving.” The biggest award of the night, the Best Team Award, went to the women’s track and field/cross country. Senior runner Lacey Printz said that the team worked hard and credited the coaches and team captains for keeping the team focused. “This is the most incredible team we’ve had, and we just love running together and just having fun and doing it for God’s glory,” Printz said. To open the night, the James R. Byers Award was presented to senior track and field sprinter Tucker Peabody, senior volleyball player Caitlin Dotson and junior cross country/track and field runner Tessa Hoefle. Just because someone is king of his craft doesn’t mean he’ll ever stop learning, and for one of sports’ most respected and successful individuals, learning is something that never ceases. At the sixth annual Don Meyer Evening of Excellence, Baseball Hall of Famer and legendary Chicago Cub Ernie Banks taught all in attendance at Allen Arena the values of the learning process. “I’m just a learning person,” Banks said. As a part of the event, attendees got the chance to learn a little bit about Banks’ past, hear about his interactions with some of baseball’s great players and take to heart some of the wisdom he shared in a conversation with Jonathan Seamon. Banks, 83, is one of baseball’s most admired individuals. An icon in Wrigley Field on Chicago’s north side, the man beloved as “Mr. Cub” has amassed a large number of honors. Not only is he a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. His Cubs’ jersey number was retired and there’s a statue in his honor at Wrigley Field. He’s also a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom – an award given him by President Barack Obama, another well-known Chicagoan, in 2013. Banks shared ballfields with such baseball legends as Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Ron Santo and Roberto Clemente. Banks shared an anecdote about a time he encountered the legendary Robinson during a time out at the plate. The two met, and Robinson offered him sage words that impacted Banks – the importance of being silent and learning. “That’s what Jackie [Robinson] told me, you know, ‘just listen and learn,’ and that’s what I did,” Banks said. “For the young people today, that’s...

Lipscomb’s women’s and men’s cross country teams are each Atlantic-Sun Conference Champions. The victory for the women’s cross country team makes this their third consecutive time winning conference. For the men, they’ve earned their first A-Sun title. Coming into the race, both teams were ranked number one in the coaches’ poll. Lipscomb’s men and women had four runners finish in the top seven. The top runner for the women’s team was freshman Sally Larson, who finished fourth in the race. “It’s awesome to have conference on our home course,” Larson said. “We have really fought with everything we had today. It was great to have so much school support here. I’m just thrilled for our team, and I’m really looking forward to the next 3 years here.” Besides helping the Lady Bisons win conference, Larson has been named Freshman Runner of the Year. Juan Gonzalez also had been named Freshman Runner of the Year from the men’s team. “Everyone was ready for this. We have been training so hard from summer up until now,” Gonzalez said. “We all knew this was going to be a hard race, but in the end, we were going to do whatever it took to finish.” Gonzalez and Larson ended their interviews giving all the credit to the Lord by saying, “All the Glory be to God.” Coach Bill Taylor was named both the A-Sun women’s and men’s coach of the Year.
