The best off-campus study spots for Finals Week

Finding a place to study on campus during finals week can be difficult and sometimes even stressful. “Studying on campus ends up being super crowded during finals week, so it can be hard to find a good, quiet place to concentrate,” said Lipscomb senior Allie Glenn. Students crowd Starbucks and Au Bon Pain to quench their caffeine needs. Classrooms are utilized as quiet study spaces. Then there is Beaman Library, where study rooms are hard to come by as students pack “Most of the study spaces are taken from 7:00 a.m. to 3 a.m., so it is hard to find space,” said Hayden Hall. On top of lacking space, some students find being on campus a distraction to their studies. “If I end up studying on campus I’ll likely just end up socializing because I’ll always run into friends,” said Glenn. “People are very loud, and I like to talk too much to people I know,” said Erin Frazier. For many students, working off campus at local coffee shops provides a more appealing environment. “The florescent light that are in most (on-campus) buildings where I would consider studying make it difficult to focus and it isn’t the most ideal environment for a long period of studying,” said Leslie Giles. “A few of my favorite off campus study spots are Portland Brew and JJ’s, which unfortunately has recently closed permanently. Whole Foods in Green Hills actually has a lot of seating and large windows, as well as endless options for coffee and snacks.” Other students opt for more traditional study spots, like an off-campus Starbucks. “By far my favorite place...

More to the rainbow bison than just a painting

A new student-led group has made its way into the Lipscomb community, and it got the public’s attention with the painting of the rainbow bison. Painting the Bison is something all students are welcomed to take part in. It’s close to the middle of campus and something that draws people’s attention.  The Bison turned many heads when it was painted in all rainbow and read “October 11th, 7p.m. @ Bell Tower.” The reason behind painting the bison rainbow, the students said, was to make a statement on campus and get other students’ attention. “We decided to paint the bison because it has been always a huge symbol of student expression,” sophomore Kat DeVore said.  “We thought this was a way to get the word out and get people’s attention because this is something that needs to be talked about.” The students who painted the bison formed a group called “Represent the Rainbow”. The group was formed as a way to discuss gay rights and how to accept and love everyone. Sophomore Josh Yarbrough is the one leading this group. Yarbrough says this group is going to provide a safe place for people to come and discuss these issues. His plans for the group are to meet at “The Well” every Saturday night.  “This is a place for people to come and share testimonies, questions and doubts. There are a lot of opinions out there,” Yarbrough said. “I believe until we hear those things and test them against one another’s lives, we will never be able to figure out the best way to love one another.”  Yarbrough tried to put...

The Well Coffeehouse thrives in new location

Nonprofit coffee shop The Well is thriving in its new location across the street from Lipscomb. After a move from its original location on Richard Jones Rd., The Well has managed to keep most of its regulars as well as gain new customers from the neighborhood. Representative Jason Parker says, “We’ve got some new regulars. People that live in the neighborhood can just walk here to the coffee shop or if I see them on their morning jog as I’m opening the store and they come in after they’ve finished jogging. We’ve retained a lot of our regulars and also gotten new ones as well. It’s been great.” Old regulars are also pleased with the new location. Lipscomb student and longtime Well customer Spencer Bailey also enjoys that the new location kept the “comfortable” and “homey” feel of the old, but he especially enjoys the new location’s proximity to Lipscomb. “It’s right across from campus. I just walk over here. It’s my favorite part,” he says. The Well moved to the old Pizza Perfect location in May after The Well’s lease was terminated to make way for a 15-story building on Richard Jones Rd. “We were looking for locations for a few months. We really wanted to be somewhere around the Green Hills area because we had built a good following and had a lot of loyal customers. I feel like it’s a blessing from God that this place opened up,” says Parker. The business has since expanded to a second location in Brentwood in the Seven Springs...
