Here are some newsworthy links making their way around campus this week. ACADEMICS The Andrews Institute’s Leadership Tennesee program has announced its first students. A variety of camps are being hosted over the summer at Lipscomb. ATHLETICS Baseball player Hunter Brothers was recently drafted in the MLB Draft’s 24th round by the Colorado Rockies. Madi Talbert was recently named honorable mention All-America for her accomplishments. The women’s basketball team has added a new transfer student from the University of Florida to the program. Cheerleading tryouts will be held on August 20. Construction has begun for a new golf short-game facility in Brentwood for the men’s and women’s golf teams. Five have joined the men’s soccer team. The men’s and women’s track and field teams have announced their team awards for the season. Five members of the track and field team will be competing in the U.S.A. Lipscomb athletics jumped the hurdle of the NCAA’s APRs last week, with each team having the necessary grades to carry on business as usual. The NCAA’s Academic Progress Rates are assessed each term and pinpoint low academic scores for all NCAA athletes under scholarship. Any team that reaches the point of scoring a 925 or under can incur scholarship loss. Scoring below a 900 can warrant a multitude of other penalties. Lipscomb athletics passed the reports, with no team scoring below a 940. For the second year in a row, women’s tennis led the school with a score of 1000 – the highest obtainable score. The program has had the same score of 1000 since the 2008-2009 report. Below is a chart showing the APRs of all Lipscomb teams, comparing them to last year’s reports. Here are some newsworthy links making their way around campus this week. ATHLETICS Billy Ebel has been hired as the new assistant coach with the volleyball team. Graduate assistant Marcus Evans has been hired as the new sprints and hurdles coach. Women’s basketball coach Greg Brown was invited to attended the WBCA’s Center for Coaching Excellence. ACADEMICS Lipscomb has announced the installation of 14 new graduate programs, including the noted Master of Film and Creative Media. The university has released a list of noteworthy accomplishments of faculty and students over the 2013 spring semester. RECREATION The Student Activity Center is offering free group fitness classes throughout the months of June and July. A personal fitness crash course is also available on select dates this summer. Anyone willing to try out some of the facility’s new equipment for 30 minutes and write a brief report will receive a free water bottle. Post written by Ryan Hilgemann for Lipscomb Athletics. NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman Madi Talbert is poised to make history for the Lipscomb track and field team. Talbert will become the first athlete from Lipscomb to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday in Eugene, Ore. The race is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. Talbert qualified for the 3000-meter steeplechase after finishing in the top 12 of the preliminary round held two weeks ago in Greensboro, N.C. Entering with the 42nd ranked time in a field for 48 competitors, Talbert beat the odds to qualify. “She had nothing to lose going into the preliminary round,” Bill Taylor, director of cross country and track and field, said. “Our approach as a freshman was this is a great opportunity. Let’s go run a good race and as many good laps as we can. “I knew she had a chance to qualify but you don’t really expect somebody to drop 20 seconds and improve from 42nd to 12th in one race.” Talbert will be taking the same attitude into the national round of having nothing to lose. “It gives us the same freedom if not more freedom going into nationals,” Taylor said. “It is the same approach but now she gets to throw in good laps at the national finals. Every step that she takes racing just helps her build the future.” At the preliminary round, Talbert crushed the previous school record posting a time of 10:11.21. Here are some newsworthy links from around campus. ACADEMIC NEWS The College of Education has started a new program for students with intellectual disabilities. ATHLETICS NEWS Madi Talbert became the first Lady Bison to advance to the NCAA Nationals in Track and Field last Friday. Pete Dalton has been announced as a new assistant coach with the Cross Country/Track and Field program. The softball season ended earlier this month. Here’s a year-in-review of the Lady Bisons’ season. New basketball coach Casey Alexander participated in a Q-&-A with Jonathan Seamon at the Brentwood Church of Christ on Wednesday evening. Brent High introduces the event at around the 11 minute mark. EVENT NEWS Gov. Bill Haslam was on campus on Tuesday, May 28 as a part of the Volunteer Girls State conference. COMMUNITY NEWS Incoming student Maureen Maltez had her dreams fulfilled when she performed with country artist Trace Adkins. Two pieces of Lipscomb Art Chair Warren Green’s art can be seen at the newly opened Music City Center, which will be shown to the public on June 1.
