The Lady Bison Volleyball team fought hard throughout the Lipscomb Invitational, but came up short in the end. In the last match of the tournament, the Lady Bisons faced the Utes of Utah. The Pac-12 team beat Georgia Tech in three sets and ETSU in three, but Lipscomb took the Utes to four sets. The team lost the first two sets right out of the gate. The first set 25-18 and the second 25-17, but going into the locker room head coach Brandon Rosenthal had a talk with his team to get them prepared for set three. “There was a talk with the team. There’s an expectation that they’ve set, and it’s their responsibility to go after it,” Rosenthal said. Following the first two sets, the Lady Bisons came out on fire to win the third set 25-15 becoming the first team in the tournament to take Utah to four sets. Despite their efforts, the Lady Bisons came up three points short in the final set losing 25-22; however, Rosenthal was pleased with the effort from his team. “The talk after the match was just, hey I like what I saw,” Rosenthal said. “There is no chewing out or what not, well there was a little chewing out between two and three, but after the match, I mean, they gave me everything they had there in two and three, and that’s all you can ask for, and I’m really pleased with that.” At the end of the match, the Lady Bisons had more kills than the Utes, but were out-blocked. Men’s soccer split two games Saturday after playing the University of Kentucky and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In the earlier match against Kentucky, the Bisons fell short, but in the game against UAB the Bisons came away with a 4-2 victory. Sophomore fielder,Reece Holcombe, talked about the different style of play Kentucky used. “Kentucky likes to pass the ball more, they have European players so they like to pass the ball around,” Holcombe said. After a tough loss to the SEC team, the Bisons kept up their energy to get the win over UAB. “UAB is a more physical team, they are a historically bigger team and they like to be more direct,” Holcombe said, “It’s a school first, beating UAB. I think it’s a nice step in the direction that we are going. We’re getting better every year.” Sophomore midfielder, Josue Chavez, says the way they played against UAB made a difference in the outcome. “Both games were decent, Kentucky was harder to score against, but UAB, we were passing the ball better and giving ourselves more chances to score,” Chavez said. Even though the Bisons battled UAB later on in the day, Chavez spoke about how the overall energy of their game was elevated. “Our energy overall against UAB was better than Kentucky, when we were down we used our energy to pick us back up and come back and get the four goals,” Chavez said. There will be plenty of familiar names on the volleyball court when the season begins on August 8, but two fresh faces will join head coach Brandon Rosenthal on the sideline. Billy Ebel and Ann Armes have been hired as assistant coaches. Rosenthal shared his excitement in having the new staff. “I feel great about having young faces as part of what’s going on,” Rosenthal said. “They have a great opportunity to interact with the girls better than I can.” Rosenthal feels that the younger coaches will play a huge role in their season both on and off the court. Billy Ebel, originally from Kansas City, said he knew of Lipscomb before joining the staff. “Brandon has recruited several girls out of Kansas City, so I’ve known about him and the program,” Ebel said. “It’s a totally different environment here, but I love it. It’s been a smooth transition. “The girls have never seen me train or coach on the court, so I’m excited to bring that energy.” Ebel knows the game very well, having played volleyball for Ball State. Rosenthal praised Ebel’s energy, mindset and ability to recruit. “I’m really excited about his energy and recruiting knowledge,” Rosenthal said. “Such knowledge at a young age is really good. “No doubt he will bring a lot to the table during practices and matches.” Ebel, seven weeks into the new program, says the location change from Kansas City to Nashville hasn’t been too difficult of an adjustment, but the culture that Nashville offers is definitely something he can get used to. “I love the southern hospitality,” Ebel said. “It’s different,...
