School history was made when Lipscomb freshman men’s golfer Dawson Armstrong was selected to compete in the 2015 NCAA Division I men’s golf championship. As the Atlantic Sun Conference Newcomer of the Year, Armstrong is one of 45 individuals chosen to advance to Chapel Hill, North Carolina regional hosted by the University of North Carolina at the University of North Carolina Finley Golf Course. “I am glad I have the chance to represent Lipscomb,” Armstrong said. Armstrong said hopes he can continue his success into the NCAA tournament and show how Lipscomb athletes can compete with the best players. “With college golf, anyone can be just as good as you are,” Armstrong said. “You have to play your best, and sometimes your best is not good enough against college competition.” Armstrong said he has pushed himself to play his finest golf game no matter what the competition is like. Armstrong’s skill has set him up to meet the goals he and Lipscomb head men’s golf coach Will Brewer made at the beginning of the season. “Coach Brewer knew what my goals were going into the season and knows that getting there is a process,” Armstrong said. “He has helped me see the big picture and knows that I have to take each goal little by little and figure out how I can achieve what I have set out to accomplish.” Armstrong will head to North Carolina from May 14-16. The men’s golf team at Lipscomb put the finishing touches on the most successful fall season since the athletic program made the move to NCAA Division I. Will Brewer, director of golf and the head coach of the men’s golf team, was impressed with the fall as the team met most of his expectations including winning a tournament as a team and also having an individual player win as well. But the team is still planning on improving by working on the basic fundamentals, and making sure that all of the players are in the right mindset during each match. “We continue to talk about process,” Brewer said. “How you think, how you prepare for a particular shot. It allows you to swing unimpeded and helps you take a better shot.” By focusing on the process, it allows for the players to gain confidence and produce a better shot. Brewer said maintaining concentration during a golf game is important. “We’ll continue to work on the fundamentals and the things that we have to do to get better.” Brewer said. The top finishes for the men in the fall included a first place finish at the Kenny Perry Invitational hosted by Western Kentucky, a third place finish at the Pinetree Intercollegiate hosted by Kennesaw State and a sixth place finish at The Grove Invitational, co-hosted by Lipscomb and Middle Tennessee State, in College Grove. The Lipscomb men’s golf team capped a successful season with a fifth place finish in the 2014 Atlantic Sun Men’s Golf Championship. The Bisons overcame a 12 stroke deficit in the final round of action on Tuesday to leap Jacksonville for fifth place, the highest finish in the A-Sun tournament in school history. “We work processing things that we do on the golf course, and we’ve been working on those stringently for the last four months,” head coach Will Brewer said. “I think our team rose to the occasion. We all kind of sold out and believed in what we were trying to do, and it came together that last day. “We talked about moving up to the fifth spot potentially. 12 shots is a lot, but we felt like if we played well and they didn’t play quite as well then we could do it. Fortunately it worked out,” Brewer said. Finishing in the top five of a conference with six of the nation’s top 100 teams took a great overall team performance from Lipscomb. Head Coach Will Brewer was proud of how the team performed in the tournament. “We set some goals this year, and we accomplished most of them,” Brewer said. “We wanted to finish in the top three to five in the conference, and with six teams ranked in the top 100, we knew that would be a challenge. The Lipscomb men’s golf team has been given quite the honor. The Bisons were recently ranked number one in the nation for its’ freshmen class by GolfStat, which is the leading ranking system for all college golf. “For GolfStat, they take all of our scores in every tournament as freshmen, and they average those scores together. It’s incredible the difference one person can make for your golf team,” said freshman golfer Dowling Armstrong. “It was a great accomplishment to have within our first season,” Armstrong said. “Coach Brewer really stacked our team with a great freshmen class. We are really strong. We can all play, and play well.” There are five freshmen on this year’s team: Armstrong, Mikey Feher, Stoney Crouch, Sydney Chung and Joshua Enderle. Four of the five are playing. Due to an injury, Enderle is redshirting this season. “There’s a lot of competition on our team, healthy competition,” Armstrong said. “We are all working hard to get the top five spots to travel.” Armstrong credits head coach Will Brewer as a driving force behind the young golfer’s success. “Coach Brewer has done a lot for our freshmen class and the upperclassmen,” Armstrong said. “He has made us fearless, given us a great desire to win and made us competitors.” Brewer is going on his second year as head Men’s Golf coach and Director of Golf at Lipscomb. “I think Coach really pushes all of us, especially with our new short game facility at NGAC [Nashville Golf and Athletic Club]. The Lipscomb men’s golf team is on par to succeed now and in the future. Changes in recruiting and in the offseason have sparked an early tournament victory. Most recently, the Bisons won the Murray St. Invitational after going into a two-hole playoff. In the playoff, Alabama St. shot two over par and the Bisons shot right on par. Dustin Wilder, senior and co-captain, said that even though the penalty was assessed, the team still was confident of their ability to win. “Once we found out we were going to go to a playoff, I think we were pretty confident and pretty calm,” Wilder said. He said that while the team played well, it’s important to be patient and stay focused. “It’s easy for us to be really hyped and excited coming off a win, but not everyday is going to be a good day on the course,” Wilder said. “When we aren’t playing our best, I think it’s important to remember to stay focused and to stay patient and know that we’re capable of playing well.” In only his second year as head coach, Will Brewer has made a special effort at recruiting players that are ready to compete and win. The five freshman–one redshirt–and one transfer student have already made an impact this season, as they came to school prepared to play. “I think the upperclass realize that we’ve been very intentional about our recruits, and when they come in, they’ve come in ready and compete; they really have a strong desire to win,” Brewer said.
