All 8 and 9 a.m. classes for Friday, March 6 have been canceled due to winter weather. Rain turned to a wintry mix late Wednesday night and snow fell on campus throughout Thursday morning. Almost two inches of snow accumulated with low wind chills. Classes will resume at 10 a.m. tomorrow following the Class Schedule Disruption Policy. Almost two inches of snow covered campus early Thursday morning. Classes have been canceled for Thursday, as the snow has quickly accumulated, in addition to low wind chills. Davidson County has been issued a Winter Storm Warning that began at 6 p.m. Wednesday and will be in effect until noon today. The Campus Service Operations team has worked on clearing snow from Bison Square and major sidewalks throughout the morning. University offices are closed, except for those essential to the safety and welfare of campus residents. The dining hall is open as usual, but other dining options will open based on the availability staff. This second slap of ice and snow may look a little like Lipscomb did two weeks ago, as the temperatures are predicted to remain below freezing until mid-day Friday. Photos by Erin...

Tennessee weather can be summed up in one word: unpredictable. Over the past week, citizens of Nashville have experienced some extreme temperature changes. Tennessee is known for its rapidly changing weather. One day, you could be wearing shorts ,and the next. a winter coat. That constant shift in climate has some unfamiliar residents pretty upset. “The rapidly changing weather does not affect me, but it can bother me sometimes,” said Lipscomb alum Landry Smith. “One day, I will put away my summer clothing, and the next day, I will have to pull them right back out. Same thing for my winter clothing. In the fall, it feels like you have to choose between freezing in the morning, or burning up in the afternoon.” Smith is from Cincinnati Ohio, where the weather as he explains, is pretty normal compared to Nashville’s. “The weather in Cincinnati is great, in my personal opinion,” Smith said. “We get pretty warm summers, cold winters, as well as beautiful springs and falls. Cincinnati is far north enough that it gets cold and we get a fair amount of snow, but at the same time, it does not stay cold all the time by any means.” Senior Micah Flemming is from Hanover, Pa., where the winters are most consistent. “When it gets cold, it stays cold,” Flemming said. “The weather here is not that much different than at home, just a little more drastic.” Counties across Tennessee have a reputation of locking down at even the threat of snow. New York City holds a different place in the hearts of this year’s winter break mission trip participants, after having seen the city in a different light than most tourists.. Coby Davis, assistant professor of education, along with 15 students and 2 alumni traveled to The Big Apple with a unified purpose: service before self. In a city, or shall I say, City, with so many distractions and tourists traps, it is rather easy to overlook the needs of the people who live there. The majority of our time was spent at P.S. 179, a school in the Bronx, one of the five boroughs of New York City. This school serves pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. I had the opportunity to be a teacher’s aide in a third-grade class. My goal was to foster good relationships with my students, in hopes that they would feel comfortable talking and reading to me and asking for help as needed. Although I have been on several other mission trips to Mexico, Honduras and Africa, this was my first chance to work with this age group. Was it challenging and frustrating at times? Certainly. Would I go back tomorrow? Absolutely. Another aspect of our trip included service projects at both World Vision and Momentum. World Vision is an international evangelical relief and development organization whose primary objective is to “promote human transformation, seek justice and bear witness to the good news of the Kingdom of God.” This organization receives school supplies, clothing, food commodities and medicine from vendors across the world that seek to engage in the act of giving to the less fortunate....
